Tony Luna Creative- Update 8-14-2024- In Memoriam

I have to let you know the sad news that my lovely wife Paula passed away last Thursday morning. The last month was very hard for her due to the challenges of her Alzheimer’s and complicated by dehydration, and a previously unknown heart condition. We were fortunate to have compassionate assistance from Hospice nurses, and a twenty-four hour a day care giving service. We thought it best to take care of her at home and that was a blessing to have her in familiar surroundings. She died in my arms at 9:42 Thursday morning in a dignified way and surrounded by love.

We are asking that in lieu of flowers Paula wished that any donations go to either Alzheimer’s research, or to Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times for Kids with Cancer (for whom Paula was a volunteer camp counselor for many years).

Mendy, our daughter, and I have formed the “DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO - FOR PAULA” team page for the upcoming San Fernando Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s to honor our Paula, and to be part of an Alzheimer’s Fundraiser Walk. If you wish you may make a donation, or you may sign up to join us in a walk to raise funds to further Alzheimer’s research.  The walk will be held on Sunday, October 20 at L. A. Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley.

For information click on a link to “Donate to the Team”, or to “Join our Team.”

https://act.alz.org/site/TR;jsessionid=00000000.app20108b?team_id=901783&fr_id=17458&pg=team&NONCE_TOKEN=8647EE4B08977FB340E4D24C8F2A17BA

We will have a celebration of her life later in the year at our Memorial Bench in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula.

We are deeply indebted to you for the love you have all given her throughout the years. Below are some photos of our Paula at various SchmoozeFests! and lectures. She continues to be an inspiration and, as you can see, she was always supportive of the talented members of the Tony Luna Creative community.

Blessings to all of you.

Look what you missed…

Look at those smiling faces. Those are the smiles of the attendees of our May 2024 ZOOM SchmoozeFest!

We had a wonderful evening of storytelling, sharing artwork, with a big dose of inspiration from some very talented artist/designers. Attendees were from New Jersey, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, and local folks as well. You too can be a part of our next night of creativity and fun September 5, from 6:30 to 9:30 via ZOOM.

Put the date on your calendars and join in the fun!

- Laura Elliott- Bestselling Ghostwriter

“Dear Tony,  “…YES! There is much to share, Tony:) All great stuff. I was hired to adapt a book called Beyond The Rivers of Babylon into a screenplay. It's the true story of a Jewish boy coming of age during WWII. when The Farhud, a violent progrom of violence against the Jews, forces him to smuggle aboard a riverboat with other kids who risk their lives sailing to freedom in Iran.

It took us two years to write the screenplay and we had no idea how timely the story would be when we entered the festival season last year for 2024. Most people have never heard of the Holocaust in Iraq.

This year, the screenplay has won 6 awards so far and a table read short movie has been created from the first 14 pages of the screenplay. I'm so honored to be a part of sharing Joseph's amazing story and hope that this recognition will help land it into the hands of a great production house. I've attached the one sheet for the screenplay and a graphic with the awards listed. If you would like to learn more, you can check out

https://astounding-producer-6585.ck.page/fff5350942

where you can watch the 14-minute movie, hear about how Joseph and I collaborated on a podcast interview we did after winning the International Drama Film Festival, and also read an interview I did with the Prague International Film Festival where the screenplay placed as a Finalist…

…Lots of other projects in the hopper too!

…Always a joy to see your name in my inbox, Tony! Would be wonderful to catch up. Thank you so much for all the inspiration and for your dedication to helping all of us to encourage each other.

Have a wonderful evening,

~Laura

- Diana Mulvihill, Lifestyle Photographer

“Hi tony- …Here is a write-up… It’s about the (Microsoft) campaign in the context of ‘my journey’, as they say:

This was a really nice campaign for Microsoft's Back to School that I shot in Los Angeles. It’s been over a decade since I graduated from Art Center, and I feel like I’m in a really great place in my career: I’ve photographed enough big campaigns to be practiced, and that translates to a confidence and calm on set that is passed on to the crew and client. Shoot days are creative, cooperative, and fun for all involved, which I am happy about being a part of in an industry that can feel rushed and sometimes stressful.

At this point, a lot of campaigns live mostly digitally, and I think that this is the case with this one. We captured images of students working with various brands of laptops and tablets to highlight Microsoft’s various learning platforms and software.”

- Mark Sarkisian, Entrepreneur, Revolutionizing the Golf Experience

“Tony- I hope all is well. I have attached a article from Golf Magazine that acknowledged me as an adaptive golf consultant. It’s a great non profit.  I have set a meeting with the Director of Golf for LA County to see if Barrier Golf charity can possibly replicate it here in Southern California.

Thank you for your mentorship, friendship, and guidance. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Best,”

Mark

From Golf.com, Aug. 2022, article written by Josh Berhow

Why this pioneering golf course is focusing on access just as much as design

“….When unveiled next spring, its design and facilities will make it among the most inviting in the world — a course created predominantly for the adaptive golfer. There will be no bunkers at The Loop, and though all the grass has yet to grow in, there won’t be any rough whenever it does. Carts will be permitted to drive everywhere (even on slopes and greens), while the adjacent facilities are being constructed to accommodate disabled golfers. If anything like this has ever existed in golf, it certainly wasn’t intentional.”

Tanelle Bolt had one thought when she first saw The Loop under construction last summer: Why doesn’t everybody do this?

Bolt, 35, is paralyzed. Eight years ago she suffered a free-jumping accident and burst her T6 vertebra. Before her accident she managed two companies and competed in fitness competitions. Now she’s made it her mission to raise awareness about the lack of equipment and resources available to those with mobility issues — and to help those who are in need of it.

Bolt and Mark Sarkisian, who has polio, were brought in as adaptive design consultants and drove specialty carts around the property to make sure the terrain was workable. The course will buy about eight to 10 of these single-rider golf carts for those who need them. The wheels are wider, offset and have a different tread and weight distribution so they can drive on the greens at no harm to the course.”

- The Spring 2024 term begins next week, and among the amazing, life-enhancing classes is “Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One” (Online - ACX-481) beginning on Tuesday, 16 January, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Course Description:

Change is inevitable. Your job changes may be big or small, they may be caused by your or by outside forces, but they all involve some form of introspection on what you want out of your life and consideration of the impact your decision will have on the lives of those you care about the most. Crafting a Meaningful Career is a unique course that offers its participants the opportunity to examine the pros and cons of past employment, deep dive into what motivates each member, evaluate individual risk tolerance, and how to create a plan to confidently move on to the next level. It’s about defining one’s unique purpose and how to make it a reality, not about filling in someone’s place on an HR manning table.

Here are some quotes from past members of our class, and current members of our creative community:

"...this class offered lessons designed to get in touch with where your passion lies..."

"...helped me to redefine my goals and determine the steps to get there..."

"...confirmed my decision to make this important change in my career..."

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

ACX is pleased to offer 50% off all Spring courses. We’ve handpicked courses perfect for your continued professional development as a visual communicator or entrepreneur..

Subject/Title of Talk:

Keys to Powerful Photographs

Description of Talk: Photographers are technical creatives.

Our primary tool(s) demand it. It was so with film and it’s even more so with digital photography. While anyone can be taught the pedantic mechanics of a camera, a small subset of photographers make powerful photographs by doing something differently, less technical, and more emotional. Their work grabs us, holds our attention, and speaks to us on a subliminal level. It’s taken me several decades to sift through the lure of technical mastery and understand to look, listen with my heart, and interpret the world true to my vision. These keys to powerful photographs are what I hope to impart.

“Mr. Luna, Hey Tony! I've only just recently returned from trekking with a small cohort of five mates in the spectacular Dolomites in the Italian Alps where on the last day of our trip we got to try (for the first time in my life) the via Ferrata style of climbing! The purpose of the trip was to test our idea as a working prototype for a new business model of mine: THE MASTERCLASS PHOTO DESTINATION

This is the perfect overlap of my three vocations:

+TEACHING

+EXPLORING

+VISUAL STORYTELLING

The BIG idea now is to offer these photo safaris to everyone for Spring / Fall of 2023 as adventure destinations to the far corners of the world *(Patagonia, Namibia, New Zealand, Greenland, etc.,). This wonderful overlap of passions and profession is the result of my long term personal project around the Japanese idea of 'ikegai', or perhaps better known as my reason for being!

If you're reading this edition of Laura's Magic Monthly, it means you’ve been taking big and small steps to make your writing and/or career dreams a reality. And on the way you’ve needed to “do the thing that was scary.” You are brave and I am proud of you.

EVERY step matters.

Making progress and having the courage to continue each day will help you feel confident and in control no matter what your goal. You have to keep moving.

Inertia causes fear to gain a foothold and can look like this ––

❗️I don’t know if I can write this (YOU CAN)

❗️I don’t know if I should write this (YOU SHOULD AND THEN DECIDE HOW YOU FEEL)

❗️Isn’t there someone else more qualified to write this? (THERE’S NO ONE LIKE YOU)

Thoughts like these just mean you're coming into your purpose. Doubts are actually a good sign. Knowing how to address those doubts is an important process of writing.

Justin Bastien, Director, Photographer-

From Linkedin

Justin writes:

“Behind the scenes from our Chevy Colorado ‘Big Life’ commercial for the launch of Major League Baseball season. It’s incredible to see what goes in to making a big commercial. It may seem like a lot of people on set, but every single person is critical to the success of the shoot. Thanks to the whole crew for crushing it on this one and going the extra mile in the rain and mud day after day to make it happen.”

#chevy #colorado #bts

Justin Bastien takes us on a road trip with his broadcast Chevy “Big Life” campaign. Shot over 5 days, with a crew of over 100, over 12 locations, large builds, and extensive running footage, the schedule for this sunny summer spot coincided with California's largest rain storm in decades, adding a level of challenge Justin hadn’t encountered before. His team pivoted to a highly flexible approach, making adjustments quickly and efficiently to solve a myriad of problems along the way and bring the "summer" to the Big Life Chevy Colorado story. Bet you can’t tell. Full of life and heartwarming moments, this successful campaign goes the distance!

Attention Friends of Tony Luna Creative!

(Editor’s note: Congratulations Shannon! We are extremely proud of you and we know you will make a great addition to the University of Arkansas MFA program in photography!

Hey Tony,

Just wanted to share the good news that I’ve decided to pursue my MFA at the University of Arkansas!

It was a tough decision, but I think I made the right one for me. I really connected with the faculty and students I met when I visited and am excited to work with them.

Their program offers everything I’ve been looking for, plus they are offering me tuition remission and a paid position as a Teaching Assistant.

I just wanted to say thank you again for all of your support and encouragement throughout this process. You are amazing!!! I’m not sure I would have been able to figure this out without your Crafting A Meaningful Career class!

Hope all is well.

Take care,

Shannon

TATTOO MIKE: The Story of the Illustrated Man,

the documentary film about the visual artist, and iconic Coney Island Sideshow performer, Michael Wilson, is running a new KICKSTARTER!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1124828703/tattoo-mike-the-story-of-the-illustrated-man?ref=project_build

“It’s going by so quickly!  We’re already into the 2nd half of the calendar for the KICKSTARTER campaign for TATTOO MIKE.  I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has made a financial contribution, reached out online to say hello, or simply had a curiosity in Michael Wilson’s story and are taking the time to follow this project on social media. I also wanted to specifically say thank you to all of you who helped plug the campaign to your friends and your social network. Your efforts are tangible and a growth in interest is noticeable. We have just over 10 days to go and we’re already dangerously close to hitting the planned target, and may even be in a position to stretch before this ends. This is a direct result of of your efforts to spread the word.  Please keep taking the @tattoomikefilm Instagram posts and sharing them to your Stories, and @tattoomikefilm Tweets and reTweeting.  You know who you are. I know who you are. And this will finish because of you! Thanks a ton.”

Ethan Hill, Director, second from left.

If you can make a contribution that would be amazing, but what is critical is sharing this project with friends and colleagues so this film has a chance to move forward. The KICKSTARTER button below will take you straight to the campaign page. Interesting content is planned over the next few weeks coming straight to your mail box and the REWARD offerings are quite good!

THANK YOU for checking this out!”

Further, Ellen informs us about her work being featured by Amanda Smith Gallery:

“I started playing with my pinhole lens back in November. I had no idea that I would fall in love with the dreamy quality and the unique collaboration that the long exposures create with the subject and myself. While I was in Hong Kong, I noticed the Amanda Smith Gallery had a call for ‘Portraits’ juried by Elizabeth Flinsch. I sent in 5 of my pinhole portraits. Last week, I learned that I not only made the exhibition but the Fine Art Limited Edition Exhibition Book! I am truly grateful for the positive feedback towards my new passion.

- Editor’s note: A personal congratulatory note goes out to a dear friend, Everard Williams Jr.-

- Everard Williams, Jr. -

We are proud to announce that after an exhaustive search by the selection committee led by Dana Walker-Juick, Everard Williams Jr. has been selected to be the new chair of the Photography + Imaging department at ArtCenter College of Design. We could not be prouder to have such an accomplished artist/educator (and former student of mine back in the day) as the leader of the department.

Excerpted from the ArtCenter press release.

From the ArtCenter press release: Award-Winning Photographer and Educator Everard Williams Named Chair of Photography and Imaging Department at ArtCenter College Of Design

First African American Undergraduate Department Chair in College’s History.

Award-winning photographer and educator Everard Williams has been named chair of the Photography and Imaging Department at ArtCenter College of Design, as announced today by Interim Provost Dr. Anne Burdick. Williams is the first African American to serve as an undergraduate department chair in the College’s history.

Williams has been a member of the ArtCenter community for many years—as a student, an alumnus (BFA 89), a professor, and as a faculty director, as well as previously serving as department interim chair. He’s taught numerous courses at the College, participated in significant panel discussions, and assumed management of the department in times of transition, including the shift to remote teaching and learning at the start of the pandemic. Williams was a founding member of the College’s inaugural Council on Diversity and Inclusion, and he continues to be a strong advocate for the student body, especially those from under served communities and students of color.

- Ellen Freidlander-

Fine Art Photographer

Hope you all had a lovely summer. I have been BUSY in my creative space and am excited to share some new developments in my work...

In January, 2019, I was selected to present my Extended Frame Photographs LIVE at Open Show Pasadena/East LA. After this event, I sought to get involved with the organization and was invited for a coffee with Bill Wishner, the founder of Pasadena Photography Arts (PPA), who then brought me on as an Advisor. This summer, I was promoted to Co-Director of PPA, alongside Douglas Hill. I am so proud of the community that has developed from our team of Advisors, the Open Show artists and FORUM featured guests.

This is where my art comes in! This fall, I am using my photography to fundraise for PPA. For the next several months, I will be selecting key works from my catalog to feature; I welcome you to explore my "Street September"

https://www.ellenfriedlanderphotography.com/print-shop-1 collection, every print sold will make a huge difference.” Please take advantage of this generous opportunity to help Pasadena Photography Arts

Yoga for Addiction Recovery: 8 Limbs, 10 Bodies, 12 Steps Paperback – September 6, 2022 - amazon.com

Book cover design for “Yoga for Addiction Recovery” delivers just that; practical yoga techniques and tools to support ongoing recovery from active addiction. Years spent, by the author, in both recovery and in practicing yoga have made clear that the underlying principles of both yoga and the 12 Steps weave together, complimenting each other in a totally cohesive way.

- Libero DiZinno, Artist, Educator, Adventurer-

Ken Merfeld (c) 2022

“Mr. Luna, I've only just recently returned from trekking with a small cohort of five mates in the spectacular Dolomites in the Italian Alps where on the last day of our trip we got to try (for the first time in my life) the via Ferrata style of climbing!

Any and all interested parties feel free to DM me at my INSTA:

- Carmel O’Mara-Horwitz, Artist, Illustrator

“Hello Tony, As I promised, I want to share my good news with you! I am part of a team at the newly established Fredman Foundation in San Diego. The foundation is partly in memory of the Artist Faiya Fredman, whom my mother Allwyn O’Mara and I worked with closely at the end of her life. In the last two years, Allwyn, Sara Stewart - Faiya’s Granddaughter - and I have put together a book showcasing her many decades of art, titled Faiya Fredman. It will be here just in time for an intimate retrospective of her work at the Athenaeum in La Jolla.

I would like to invite you & anyone interested to see the show, Continuum: The Art of Faiya Fredman, as well as the many activities planned around the show.

Continuum is opening on the evening of September 9th, 6:30 to 8:30.

Here is the link to the show:

https://www.ljathenaeum.org/events/exhibition-2022-fredman

Those who come to the opening will have the treat of another show opening simultaneously titled Artists’ Books Collection by Erika Torri, just retired director of the La Jolla Athenaeum.

Erika purchased many of Faiya’s works for the Athenaeum, including many Artists’ Books Allwyn and I worked on with her. I am proud to be included in the library's permanent collection.

We will have our artists’ books for sale along with products I helped to design. One new exciting piece for purchase will be a small lenticular ready to be framed.

These are some of the artists' books we made.

Here is the link to Erika’s show: https://www.ljathenaeum.org/artists-book-collection

Additionally on the evening of October 22nd the author of the introduction to Faiya’s book, art critic Robert Pincus Ph.D., will be speaking on a panel moderated by Suda House, professor at Grossmont College. Also on the panel of speakers will be Alfred Pagano & Allwyn O’Mara, who worked closely with Faiya throughout her career.

We will be selling and signing our new book, Faiya Fredman, at the event. Several educational activities will be offered in conjunction with the show.

Suda House will be teaching a class for adults on utilizing your scanner as a camera.

She will have guest speakers. I am happy to be teaching the lenticular night. Allwyn and Alfred Pagano will share their knowledge on other nights.

I will have to share the details in another email. On Saturday, September 24th, in conjunction with San Diego Design week, we will offer art activities for children and adults on the patio of the La Jolla Athenaeum.

It would be lovely to see you so I can share with you what I have been doing at the Fredman Foundation.

Best wishes to all,”

Carmel

Details on the show and activities can be found below:

https://www.ljathenaeum.org/events/exhibition-2022-fredman

CONTINUUM: THE ART OF FAIYA FREDMAN

Continuum presents an intimate view into the life's work of Faiya Fredman (1925-2020), whose seventy-year art career produced an ambitious and eclectic body of work driven by experimentation with unusual formats and unconventional materials. Her large and varied works include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, installations, and artist’s books. A graduate of UCLA, Fredman juggled marriage and raising a family with the rigors of developing cutting-edge art. Her final bodies of work combine goddess imagery, vintage puppets, narrative forays into surreal worlds, and hybrid works combining graffiti with botanical imagery.

Fredman’s works can be found in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and numerous others.

The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

I founded my own freelance business soon after graduating from ArtCenter and developed it into my current creative consultancy by which I serve businesses, non-profits, and independent authors through brand strategy and visual design.

In addition to serving clients I began teaching part time in extension certificate programs back in 1993. In early 2007 I started teaching full-term courses online asynchronously in additional to the classroom. Subsequently I became an early adopter of the hybrid model which encompasses both asynchronous delivery and real-time classroom experience. I began teaching with ACX in 2017 and currently teach fully online. My ACX courses focus on creativepreneurship and branding for creatives, and attract a student population that’s diverse in generation, experience, education, location, purpose, and focus.”

Welcome to my new studio!

After a lifetime of dreaming, several years of planning, and months of construction, I am finally moved back into my Silver Lake home. The movers came just after this photograph was taken, and the sorting and purging is still in progress (the floor is currently nowhere to be seen).

With this big change, comes an exciting new creative chapter. Working alongside my daughter and creative partner, Alexi, this home studio will be a collaborative environment where ideas are realized.

We are looking forward to many shared moments in our new space! Thank you all for being with us on this journey that has only just begun.

Sending Love, Light, and Creative Flow,

Ellen

“What do we do with all that talent? Older workers and the new economy”

:::::

Experienced workers are as creative, engaged and productive as younger peers

Did you catch the half-time show at the Super Bowl highlighting hip-hop artists Dr. Dre, Mary J Blige, and Snoop Dogg? The performance garnered high praise among critics and the audience (including me). Less remarked on is that Dr. Dre, Mary J Blige, and Snoop Dogg are in the second half of life—ages 57, 51, and 50, respectively.

Mid-life hip-hop artists are far from alone in exercising their creative energies in their 50s and older. The Whitney Museum in New York City recently had an exhibit documenting the remarkable career of Jasper Johns, an artist still active at age 91. Judy Collins, age 82, released on Feb. 25 her 29th album Spellbound, her first album containing all original songs.

Examples about older artists coming up with original material and continuing to practice their craft are easily multiplied once you start looking. Less appreciated is the economic message in their creative engagement: Prospects for strong economic growth are brighter than conventional perspectives hold with the aging of the population. The skill, knowledge, and experience of older artists highlight just how wrong is the popular stereotype that the typical 50-plus worker is well past their creative, productive, and learning peak.

“This popular notion is what motivated me to write my book,” says Daniel Levitin, age 64, author of Successful Aging: A Neuroscientist Explores the Power and Potential of Our Lives. He’s also a professor emeritus of psychology and behavioral neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal and a distinguished faculty fellow at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. “What we’re dealing with is another ‘ism’–ageism.”

Look at it this way: There’s no question the U.S. population is aging with growing numbers of people entering the traditional retirement years. The Census Bureau predicts by 2034—a mere dozen years—for the first time in U.S. history there will be more Americans 65 years and older than 18 years and younger. What should be in doubt is the commonplace assumption that the demographics of an aging population will weigh on the economy’s vitality. The evidence is overwhelming that experienced workers—much like Dr. Dre, Jasper Johns, and Judy Collins–can be as creative, productive, and engaged as their younger peers on the job.

Read: I left my job at age 65 and don’t want to retire — what next?

The real challenge is to get employers to support and to hire older workers who want to stay employed. “What do we do with all that talent?” says Tony Luna, age 77, head of his eponymous creative consulting firm and adjunct professor at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. “It’s an opportunity that is waiting to be tapped into.”

Researchers have shown how cognitive processing speed declines with age, but other mental functions improve, such as language and speech. Most important for work and entrepreneurship is that the lessons of experience accumulate. Older adults can “connect the dots” by drawing on memories and tapping into the knowledge they’ve gained over the years. “So much of what we consider to be judgment and wisdom come from experience,” says Levitin. “That’s why the older workers are so good at solving problems.”

Read: Trying to fill jobs at your company? One of the 15 million retired workers between age 55 and 70 might be able to help

Associate professor Thomas Stapleford in the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame sees that judgment and wisdom at play in the classroom. He helped design the “great books” series that is part of the core curriculum for Notre Dame’s Inspired Leadership Initiative. The Initiative helps up to 30 accomplished individuals at the end of their careers to think about what comes next by spending an academic year at Notre Dame. In classroom discussions with undergraduates, Stapleford says the fellows offer what Aristotle called “phronesis,” the practical wisdom that comes from experience.

Read: Once considered on the cusp of retirement, these older workers are taking a ‘gap year’ after successful careers

“They have their life experience, and they draw on it to enrich whatever you are reading,” he says. “It’s a different kind of knowledge—practical wisdom—only learned through experience and it can’t be formally taught.”

Luna echoes Stapleford in comments about a course he teaches on crafting a meaningful career at the Art Center. Among his students are those nearing retirement age and they’re looking for something that still brings in an income but better reflects their values. He encourages them to begin their search by first looking back on their work history, understanding their successes and failures, likes and dislikes. They connect the dots and eventually “they come up with clever, unique things that they never knew they could do before,” he says.

Too many employers believe older employees are past their peak and, therefore, reflexively close off options for using their creativity. Big mistake. Arthur Cropley, a scholar of creativity, runs through a list of research documenting the creativity of ordinary older adults. His conclusion? “Such findings suggest that the social convention of ceasing to work at about age 60, not the disappearance of the psychological potential for creativity, may be a major causal factor in reduced creativity at older ages,” he writes in the research paper CreativePerformances in Older Adults.

Employers often steer away from investing in the skills of older employees since they’re stuck in their ways, right? Yet anyone who has tried to start a business knows how much new entrepreneurs need to learn. Learning new skills is also good for mental health, notes Levitin. A longtime music producer, he recently released an album of his own material, Sex and Math. “What would make me super-duper challenged would be to have people listen to music I had written and listen to me sing,” he says.

Taken altogether, employer ageism is one factor behind the striking embrace of entrepreneurship by so many people in the second half of life. Starting a business is a creative enterprise. In 2020 nearly one-quarter of new entrepreneurs were ages 55 to 64, according to the KauffmanFoundation. The share of workers who are self-employed also rises with age. For example, the share self-employed is under 20% for adults below age 50, while it’s 46% for workers ages 65 to 69, calculate economists Katharine Abraham, Brad Hershbein, and Susan Houseman in the working paper Contract Work at Older Ages.

Working late in life isn’t for everyone, including those who have labored at low-pay, physically demanding jobs. Others may decide they want to enjoy full-time leisure. But creating a welcoming environment for older workers who want to stay employed is good for them, the employer, and the economy—especially now when management is finding it hard to hire the workforce they need and want.

Tony Luna Creative- Update- 2-28-2022

Tony Luna discusses Crafting a Meaningful Career for Creatives in the 50+ community.

He focuses his presentation on different methods to design and develop your career at this age and stage of life; and how you can use reward milestones to meet your goals every step of the way.

I wish to extend a very sincere Thank You to Joanne Webb and Patch Schwadron from The Actors Fund - SAG-AFTRA, The Career Center, for inviting me to be interviewed Thursday, February 24 for their first webinar of their 2022 series “Creativity Doesn’t Age Speaker Series.”

I was able to explain how the assignments and discussions involved in our Art Center Extension “Crafting a Meaningful Career” classes help mid-career creative professionals design and create new and rewarding career opportunities for themselves. I am told that, during the 90 minute interview, 62 individuals from across the United States listened in and the response has been very positive. In Joanne’s words, ”…we so appreciate the wonderful work you continue to do for artists in helping them craft a meaningful career.  You should be so proud of the amazing training you continue to offer to the artist community, as it is much needed for gathering clarity in moving forward with one’s career.”

Joanne and Patch, you are both amazing and inspirational professionals—actual angels—and we thank you for all that you do for members of the performing arts!

ABOUT THIS SERIES

The world of work and meaningful connection for people over 50 is challenged by a number of factors at any time, but never as dramatically as during Covid-19. The Career Center's Creativity Doesn't Age Speaker Series invites guest speakers who have knowledge and commitment to addressing strategies for our community to connect and engage in creative ways during this time of physical distancing, and beyond. Of course, topics highlighted by our speakers are relevant to arts professionals at all ages and stages of their lives and careers.

(Editor’s note- You may recall that in June of last year the work of photographer Garrisson Pena was showcased in our blog as an up and coming artist to watch and he had just been hired to be a photographer for the Los Angeles Rams. Here’s a follow-up to that article and a testimony to his talent. As Branch John Milton and Branch Rickey are both attributed as saying, “Luck is the residue of design,” or “Luck is the residue of desire.” Whatever way you want to think of that Garrisson has demonstrated he has both.”)

“Dear Tony, Happy New Year! How are you? How is everything?

It is an understatement to say that it has been an incredible roller-coaster ride over past 2 months. After 4 thrilling playoff wins, I am proud to stand here today and officially shout to the world:

THE LOS ANGELE RAMS ARE SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS!!!

Words cannot comprehend how emotional I am, as the reality of the moment still hasn’t completely set in. I am soaked in euphoria and have shed tears of joy as I do not want this feeling to dissipate.

What a surreal and magical time to be alive. While I was unable to work the Super Bowl as a photographer, the Rams were so kind enough to offer me complimentary tickets thus I attended the Super Bowl as a fan.

It was worth it! Super Bowl LVI was the greatest sports moment I have ever been a part of and seen in-person. I will cherish it for the rest of my life.

As a fan, this championship means so much to the City of L.A. As a photographer, the most humbling part of it all is that I can now call myself: A Super Bowl Champion Photographer.

All the people, beyond my co-photographers, that I had the honor and privilege of working with at the Rams share this sentiment. It is an everyday joy and blessing to be a part of the Rams Family or as we call it over here:

‘The Ramily.’ We shared blood, sweat, and tears together. Looking back, I recall the excitement and anticipation when I first joined the Rams for Training Camp at UC Irvine, given it was my first day.

Little did I realize, what was in-store for the next 7 months. Working with the Rams required every single ounce of education and experience in my life to be used. I made sure to leave it all out there,

day-in and day-out. Without question, this was the greatest ride of my photography career thus far.

With the off-season underway, so does a period of reflection and celebration settle n. This chapter is officially closed. I’m excited to see what happens next and await the next phase from the Rams.

As the organization begins the process of preparing for next season, I continue to expand my horizons, stay productive, and utilize my time efficiently as possible. As you once told me, “Even Ansel Adams Has to Earn a

Living.”. It is time to get back to the drawing board and focusing on the immediate future. Let’s get to it!

Most importantly, I am not here today with the Rams without you and your endorsement. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting me throughout this once-in-a-lifetime journey. And above all, thank you for supporting

our team on our run to glory and immortality.

Once again: L.A. IS THE CITY OF CHAMPIONS!!!

I hope all is great with you and Paula. May 2022 bring you greater promise, renewed prosperity, and good health.

All my best!”

Warm Regards,

(Note: The following is from her 19 January, 2022 email)

Blog #1: The Creative Flow

When the feeling comes over me, it’s a gift.

It doesn’t mean that it’s art, but it is a true expression of the self.

“I often describe myself as ‘possessed’ when sharing my passion for photography. But what does this mean? For me, there are times when an overwhelming gnawing feeling takes over bothy body and my mind - telling me there is a need for something to be expressed. This my experience of The Creative Flow.

One of my strongest experiences of this flow state has come through creating my Betrayal Series (showcased above). When this project began, I was doing everything in my power to make sure my kids were healthy and stable. but this left me brewing with raw emotion that needed an outlet. At that time, I was working with a mentor to improve my art, and he shared the following creative exercises: use your camera upon waking up, going to bed, in between activities…without gatekeeping. through repeating this exercise for several months, I learned to lean into my photography as therapy and not judge any frame.

Tools to find your Creative Flow:

- Tap into your awareness when you feel any urge to create

- Take initiative in some form as immediately as possible (whatever means of documentation that is accessible to you - clay, camera, painting, writing, tearing up paper, video…)

- Stay objective and non-judgmental as your emotional state is fully realized

- The Creative Flow is easy to ignore, there is a discipline to learning how to act upon it

- Ramon Rik Singley, Photographer, MFA

Hi Tony! I was in your course my last semester at Art Center. I graduated in Photo, Spring 2004… would love to catch up and speak of any professional opportunities… I just graduated with my MFA from Claremont and teaching in higher academia is certainly a goal of mine and one of the main reasons I went back for the extra degree. I know if you want to teach in higher academics you need the MFA.

If you can provide any direction on attempting to look at and secure any consideration for something like that, I'd love to get your insight.

Kind regards,

Ramón Rik Singley

Ramon’s areas of expertise and interest include:

1.) Teaching in higher academia is a primary goal, as we discussed previously. (With a background in social media applications.)

2.) Alternatively, photography production will always be of interest to me, especially anything in the Key-Art advertising space. Key art is the image used to market a film in editorial print, as well as billboards we see on the street every day.

3.) And lastly, content production and art direction of commercial / film projects is in my wheelhouse and expertise.

…AND HERE ARE THE COMPLETE STORIES…

:::::

Andrew Edelstein (c) 2022

- Andrew Edelstein, Photographer- “Hi Tony, Happy New Year!!

Long time since we touched base. I wanted to give you an update since I made a successful career transition and I feel pretty good about it.

To refresh your memory, After graduating from Brooks Institute of Photography, I started my 35yr career working in a service bureau making color separations for print ads and brochures. I went on to work as a print production manager in some of the great advertising agencies in Los Angeles like, TWBA\Chiat\Day, Team One, Saatchi and RAPP in the automotive sector. I spent the last 10yrs working for a small ad agency producing all the print and digital advertising as well as all the collateral for UCLA Health.

When COVID hit the UCLA business dried up and I was forced to look for other work. I found a job at another ad agency here in Los Angeles as a DAM (Digital Asset Management) manager. This came with new responsibilities but ultimately proved to not be very challenging. With the free time that I had, I created a presentation on how the agency and our clients would be better served if we produced our own custom photoshoots instead of using Getty stock. We could create a large image library that would be propriety and the cost per image would be much less that the cost of a Getty image. Agencies tend to move slowly so I was surprised when they bought into the idea! So far, I have produced two photoshoots for Blue Cross and for DirecTV with budgets over $850,000.00. 2022 is looking like it will be even bigger for this part of the business. More importantly, I am finding this kind of work fun and I have haven’t been happier in years.

In addition to the work I have been doing at the agency, I have also become a certified executive coach and started a MBA program.

I wanted to let you know this because I still use skills I learned in your class and this is proof.

All the best,”

- Sharon Cavanagh, Photographer, Educator-

“Hello Tony, How are you? I thought I would like to give you an update of my photography life for the upcoming newsletter of the Creative Update email. Hopefully, I haven't missed it.

I am now in my second quarter of teaching an at-risk population of middle and high school students in the Monterey County region at a local charter school. I was previously on the board of directors as the Vice Chair for two years so I was able to see the school from the inside-out and appreciate their commitment to an individualized learning plan for the students. During covid, I volunteered to teach one (virtual) photography class as I was searching for another teaching opportunity. Since then, I've resigned from the board and I'm on track to earning a CTE qualification (Career Technical Education Credential). It's a two-year study commitment that upon graduation, will allow me to teach at any school - college or university - throughout California. The charter school is committed to offering their students alternative and unusual career paths that include photography, drone piloting and entrepreneurship business classes that will open up opportunities for this specific population. I feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to have 'found' this type of school. They are incredibly supportive in every way although, I haven't succeeded in talking the principal into buying (me) a Leica M11 just yet but I still have time.

Thank you for continuing to support the photography community.

Cheers!”

Brian Biery (C) 2021

- Brian Biery, Documentary Photographer, Adjunct Professor-

“…My exhibit 'We Are All Neighbors' (was) displayed at Rosebud Coffee. The purpose of this project is to show that when people are provided with the appropriate supportive services and embraced by their community, they are then able to successfully recapture their essence and purpose. As a result, they experience lives filled with joy and fulfillment, and ultimately become valuable contributors to our society.”

(Notes from a flyer announcing a presentation by Brian Biery titled, “We Are All Neighbors in 2022” for the Southern California Planning Congress” on January 22)

“Whether the fallout from a capitalist and consumer-based economy, an uncaring political system that favors affluence, lack of public healthcare and affordable housing, stagnant wages that lead to poverty, or all of the above and more, a growing number of people face living on the street. Why is this an American phenomenon and do we reverse it? When provided with appropriate supportive services and programs, and embraced by their community as equals, citizens who were once unhoused are able to recapture successfully they essence and experience lives of joy and fulfillment. Ultimately, they become active community members and valuable contributors. As we begin a hopefully brighter new year, let us strengthen our commitment as planners to making more inclusive decisions about the future and broadening the collective definition of neighbor.“

Brian Biery, Pasadena Neighborhood Network; Adjunct Professor at Pacific Oaks College

Thank you!

Brian.

- Ibarionex Perello, Photographer, Podcaster, Educator

“Tony,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that things are well with you and yours.

I wanted to share that I and Everard appeared on a recent episode of the podcast 99% Invisible on the subject of the Kodak Shirley cards and the rendering of darker skin tones in film and print. Check it out below.

https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/shirley-cards/

Take care and have a wonderful holiday season.

All the best.“

Ibarionex Perello

The Candid Frame

http://www.thecandidframe.com

“Photographer Ibarionex Perello recalls how school picture day would go back in the 1970s at the Catholic school he attended in South Los Angeles. He recalls that kids would file into the school auditorium in matching uniforms. They’d sit on a stool, the photographer would snap a couple images, and that would be it.

But when the pictures came back weeks later, Perello always noticed that the kids with lighter skin tones looked better — or at least more like themselves. Those with darker skin tones looked to be hidden in shadows. That experience stuck with him, but he didn’t realize why this was happening until later in his life

When Perello got older, he learned to use a camera. And he realized that capturing images of people with darker skin tones posed certain technical challenges. Sometimes Perello felt as if he had to work against the limitations actually built into the camera and the film. And that’s because, even if we think of the camera as a neutral technology, it is not. In the vast spectrum of human colors, photographic tools and practices tend to prioritize the lighter end of that range. And that bias has been there since the very beginning.”

A record 4.4 million people quit in September as Great Resignation shows no signs of stopping

Published Fri, Nov 12 20211:09 PM EST

Jennifer Liu

A record-high 4.4 million people, or 3% of workers, quit their job in September, according to the Labor Department’s latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released Friday.

The tight market, where workers have more leverage to move around and employers are doing everything they can to staff up, is already impacting the holiday shopping season, ZipRecruiter chief economist Julia Pollak tells CNBC Make It.

And there’s reason to believe quitting will continue well into 2022.

Quits increased the most in arts, entertainment and recreation (like people who staff live events); other services (which ranges from auto workers to hairstylists to laundry workers); and local and state government jobs.

So far, roughly 34.4 million people have quit their jobs this year, with more than 24 million doing so since April. By comparison, 36.3 million people quit their job in all of 2020.

Since the last time we spoke I moved to a new and slightly bigger studio space and have produced a decent amount of work. It’s now time to share with others.

I also want to thank you again for the magic that you do in your ACX class.  I don’t think I realized that art making was going to come back into my life so intensely. It feels really good and I want to tell you how important you were in this process.  You said some things that I didn’t believe at the time, but here I am, making art again and loving it.

 I hope you are great!!!

Laura Elliott, Author and Ghost Writer:

From Laura’s newsletter: “I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. A few celebrations we had this year included a feast of Southern Cooking which featured a coffee and rum roast:) I'm most grateful for the health of our growing family this year and getting to cuddle my grandson. Enjoying time with loved ones is the best way to usher in this holiday season.

One of the blessings of our dinners together is listening to each others' stories. Have you heard the ones you need to hear? Have you told the ones you are dying to tell? I think there's nothing more tragic than a story untold. People these days are hurting, confused, sad, stuck and could possibly only breakthrough their despair by reading your story.

It's Cyber Monday and I'm not a big box store with lots of loot. But if you're shopping today, I'd like you to know I have a deal––a bundle of 4, 1-hour coffee talks. That's a month of writing inspiration, clarity, and editing. On the calls, we will specifically talk about your WIP (Work In Progress) or we will spitball your inspirations around a future writing project. I'll help you figure out a way around the confusion to come up with a plan to get 'er done!

Normally this package would cost $600. Today I'm offering this special bundle for more than 50% off, but this offer DOES END ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 3!

Get the deal here. https://calendly.com/laurasmagicday/cyber-monday-coffee-talk-deal-package-of-4?month=2021-11

This is all about writing from the heart. Don't let the inspiration for your book pass you by.

What a joy it has been to serve my clients in this way with lots of gratitude this year for their Kirkus-starred reviews, TV interviews, radio and podcast interviews with NPR and other top networks, endorsements from celebrities like Deepak Chopra, as well as New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestsellers.

So, what are you waiting for?

I just want to encourage you to do whatever it takes to get the story you need to tell out in a world so desperately in need of inspiration!

You got this word warrior!

…AND HERE ARE THE COMPLETE STORIES…

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

- Tony di Zinno, Artist, Educator, Explorer, and Director of Photography on “The Bees of the Grand Staircase Escalante” documentary

From an email October 9, 2021-

“Mr Luna,

If you ever have doubts about:

Q: Who am I to speak out… ?

A: Your voice really does matter!

Our little doc THE BEES OF THE GRAND STAIRCASE ESCALANTE - was a small part of a concerted effort and it turns out helped make a BIG difference!

https://www.beesofgsenm.com/

My part in this film was essentially motivated by turning my outrage at a grave injustice, into a non-violent, peaceful protest of 45’s removal of the protections the Obama administration had previously placed at Bears Ears and GSENM.

Today, President Biden just restored the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to its original boundaries.

What you may not have heard is that the bees are mentioned FOUR TIMES in the proclamation restoring the monument. See below.

Mentions in the proclamation:

"...Grand Staircase-Escalante has fulfilled the vision of an outdoor laboratory with great potential for diverse and significant scientific discoveries... including the identification of more than 600 species of #bees, some of which likely exist nowhere else on Earth..." 1/4

"...lands within the Grand Staircase-Escalante landscape contain an astounding biodiversity of #bees..." 2/4

"These uncompromising desert lands are home to high concentrations of rare species of bees with fascinating adaptations to their local environment, such as Diadasia bees, which build nests in the hard desert soil that feature a clay chimney on top, an architectural design that has, thus far, stumped scientists trying to understand its utility." 3/4

"This area... is home to a number of rare bee species as well as a number of hot desert endemic species of #bees in the northernmost known extent of their range."

4/4

These were the exact talking points of our film! Let this example inspire you to make your passion project come to fruition.

What issue is set deep in your heart 💜 ?

How can you approach it as a storyteller?

What point of view are you showing?

Where can you share to find an audience?

Whom are the experts and what do/did we learn from them?

Why is it important?

Get your voice out there.

Respectfully

Excerpted from an NPR article by Deepa Shivaram / Updated October 8, 2021

Biden restores protections for Bears Ears monument, 4 years after Trump downsized it

“President Biden restored the boundaries of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monuments in southern Utah and added protections for the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts national monuments on Friday.

The Bears Ears National Monument, which was created by President Barack Obama shortly before he left office, will go back to 1.36 million acres, and Grand Staircase will be restored to 1.87 million acres.”

- Robert Gallagher, Photographer- “So this is pretty cool. My first book cover and it's a doozy! From one of my all-time favorite photoshoots with the legendary John Mellencamp, the writer I worked with on the story for Q magazine has written the book on him, literally, and my portrait graces the cover. I know Paul, the author, has as much admiration for Mellencamp as I do, so I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. I believe the backstory to our shoot day makes an appearance as well. It was an interesting day involving walking canes and swords! Published in the UK by Little Brown on September 14, 2021.

In other news, we shot a cover story for The Boston Globe Magazine with filmmaker Craig Ross Jr., director of the Boston-based cult classic ‘Blue Hill Avenue’.
