Tony Luna Creative- Update- 6-30-2018

HERE ARE THE HEADLINES WHICH ARE FOLLOWED BY THE COMPLETE STORIES…

- Angel Mendoza showed his vibrant artwork based on Meso-american mythology at the AC Gallery in Hollywood on June 2. This is the beginning of more expositions by this truly original artist and we look forward to more opportunities for the public to appreciate his work. Well done Angel!…

- Brian Pescador allows us an opportunity to try to understand how photography saved him to reclaim his life after years of mental illness. He provides us with a link to a candid article he wrote on his struggles in the hopes of helping others who suffer from depression. This is a must read especially in light of the recent tragic deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and the challenges of everyday life in today’s complicated world. We are extremely grateful for Brian’s courage in sharing his story and encourage all to seek the help they need and to look to the value of art for a fresh look at the world.

- The next OPEN SHOW/Pasadena and East LA is to be presented at The Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, Thursday, July 12. The deadline for submission of photography artwork is Tuesday, July 3, and is open to all photographers on any topic. The purpose of the show is to “strengthen our photography community and bring together the public and artistic community in discussion of photography.” There is no theme and you are invited to show your best project. Good luck!…

- AC Gallery, Hollywood, California is “currently accepting artists working in all media for ART in LA for LA afFAIR 2018 - the inaugural boutique art fair presented by AC Gallery from Friday, August 17th to Sunday, August 19th, 2018.
ART in LA afFAIR will showcase independent, emerging artists presenting solo projects and works with an emphasis on contemporary fine art in all media including painting, sculpture, photography with edition prints and unique merchandise also available to the public. A maximum of 30 artists will be accepted on a rolling basis to exhibit during the art fain at AC Gallery LA.”…

- Andrea McCarthy, from AcademicKeys, has again generously shared a list of job opportunities in the arts at institutions of higher learning around the world. Listed in this blog is a small sample of the opportunities. More jobs are listed on the web site for Academic Keys, Inc. Take a look. Who knows, the right job may be listed there for you.  Thank you Andrea for making these notifications possible…

… AND NOW HERE ARE THE COMPLETE STORIES:

On the evening of June 2 the work of long time supporter of Crafting a Meaningful Career, artist Angel Mendoza, showed his work in a collaborative art event at the AC Gallery. It was great seeing the response of the attendees to his work which focuses on his blending of Meso-american mythology with influences from graffiti composed while using contemporary graphic technology. His vibrant work brings ancient Olmec, Maya, and Aztec narratives to light in a way that simultaneously delights and informs leaving the viewer wanting more from this truly unique artist.

(Editor’s note: I urge all to click on the link provided which will take you to the insightful and candid c-heads.com web site article written by Brian Pescador about how photography helped him get his life back after years of mental illness. Thank you Brian for generously allowing us to reposition the article in the hopes of helping others who are challenged and in need of hope.)

- Brian Pescador, Photographer-

“Hey Tony, I hope you are well. I just wanted to share this with you. I was interviewed this week by this fashion magazine and it just came out this morning. I am so proud of it and wanted to share it with you. If you could share on your blog that would be awesome. I hope what I wrote about could help others.

Thanks for your time & all the years of friendship and wisdom.

(And in a follow-up email…)

“Tony, …Thanks so much again Tony for reading my new interview. Please share it with anyone, who you think might be a little down. I really hope it could give other people a better idea as to what is going on now in the world.
From the time I finished this interview last week the world tragically lost Kate Spade & Anthony Bourdain. So many people can’t understand why they did it. People are saying they were so successful and they had it all. I hope after reading what I wrote they might get a new perspective.
Thanks again and talk soon Tony
-Brian”

AC Gallery LA
1546 N. Highland Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90028

We are currently accepting artists working in all media for ART in LA for LA afFAIR 2018 - the inaugural boutique art fair presented by AC Gallery from Friday, August 17th to Sunday, August 19th, 2018.

A maximum of 30 artists will be accepted on a rolling basis to exhibit during the art fair at AC Gallery LA.

Art fairs are one of the primary platforms where galleries, curators and collectors “discover” their artists. It is an opportunity for an artist to meet future art partners, further strengthen their careers and have direct feedback about their work from the global art world.

AC Gallery, based in Hollywood, California offers a bridge between talented, soon to be discovered contemporary artists with the established global art market. For more information about AC Gallery please visit
http://www.acgallery.us

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Contemporary artists specializing in abstract, conceptual, urban, street, pop art genres utilizing any media (e.g. painting, photography, etc.) are welcome to apply. Due to a high demand among artists and the volume of applicants for AC Gallery boutique art fairs, a strong curatorial vision in the selection process is expected.

(Editor’s note: Erv and Sandra are much too humble in their announcing this film about their incredible dedication to preserving the many wonders of our planet. This is a beautiful film and I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to view it and to celebrate the work these two marvelous people have done. Especially pay close attention at the end of the film where Erv says—and I am paraphrasing now—“Try to pick out those moments in your life when one little thing has made a difference to you, and that moment has changed your life. Maybe it was deciding to have children. Maybe it was that moment you wanted to be a baker, or a cook, and you’re in finances or something like that. Act on that. I just say it will be much more rewarding when you get to my age to look back on life and say okay I did what I wanted to do and I’m happy. In the back of your head you know you should have done this, or you should have done that. Do it! Do it before it’s too late!” Thanks Erv for summing up the values we promote and for doing what you and Sandra love to do.)

- Email from Sandra Noll and Erv Nichols, Nature Heroes, Nomadic Naturalists- “Hi, if you’ve got about 10 minutes, check out this site https://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/blogs/migrating-sandhill-cranes-mnn-film-exclusive-bryan-nelson .

It’s the premiere of a short film made by a talented filmmaker Bryan Nelson that’s pretty much a culmination of our life as 'craneiacs.' It’s what we do and why we do it along with some beautiful footage taken by him along our journeys. I think you will enjoy it.
Your thoughts and comments appreciated.”

“The other photos are from when I participated in Global Dental relief in Nepal and when I did missionary work helping Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan. I also have a ‘Be Still’ Retreat that I run at my beach house for women who need to be still when they are facing major decisions and need to get away for a few days to take time to pray and listen to the Lord for His guidance.“

Laura Elliott, Writer/Author- “Dear Tony, I’m writing to you about a dream come true. There’s really no words to say how happy I am in my new career and I know I would never be here without you. As you know I was pretty deep in despair when I came to Art Center to help me find a way out. What would I do now? How would I support myself in my uncertain future?

Well, I’ll never forget the chart we did juxtaposing our professional careers and personal lives in order to see our patterns. At the end of class we determined that my path would marry my passions for writing, travel and missionary work. It was all really great information but I had no idea how to apply this information to real life and how I would support myself.

I guess my message to people who are where I was is to just take the first step and follow your passions and pray for the Lord’s guidance.

The obvious things like travel writer or screenwriter not only seemed like long shots but as almost everyone, even a professional coach I hired to help me progress, would point out they all paid poorly. But I didn’t listen.

I charged ahead taking aim at the dream and the unseen, trusting in the Lord to show me the way. I had lost everything. I had no money. I had no idea how I would make my life work. At one point while I was taking your class I had to pay for my rent by pawning my jewelry, so pie-in-the-sky ideas shouldn’t have really even been on my radar. But I chose to put my walk with the Lord first above anything I understood. And I listened to where he called me to go.

After selling everything I had and journeying around the world twice, to 24 countries on 6 continents I now have a dream career and have made my dream of doing missionary work, living on the beach and owning a yacht come true too! It’s a crazy story but a wonderful story. I am a ghost. And since I also write about spirituality I guess you could call me a holy ghost. I smirked when I realized this because I remembered your challenge to us to figure out a great title so at a cocktail party people will ask you questions. …My business card lists my business address in Singapore :)

Today I am a contributing writer at World Travel Magazine and have gone on media trips that are fully paid for, my next one is to South Africa to survey Cape Leopards for three weeks this October. I write luxury travel articles and interview profiles that focus on life-changing, planet-healing travel featuring self-discovery, pilgrimages, eco-travel and journeys of the heart.

This is my biggest interview to date: https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/choreography-of-architecture-saving-the-planet-with-leo-dicaprio-and-the-romantic/

I have also sold my first screenplay for an episodic documentary series and the TV pilot is in production.

I am so happy because I live just about 10 minutes away from my girls and a five-minute walk from my yacht at Santa Cruz Harbor, where I sail with my partner, a sea captain, as much as possible.

Life sure has a funny way of working out. Right after I became partners on the boat with Joseph, about a year ago, I began to write for sailing companies and cruise lines. I even got invited on a media trip to LA (all expenses paid) to attend the CLIA show where I made a lot of connections and have a new piece coming out in World Travel Magazine about Beyond the Ordinary and Behind the Scenes Cruising. I write luxury travel so that has been very fun. This of course led to many more opportunities to write for other magazines and outlets as well :)

Thank you so very much for believing in me and for your wisdom. I think of you all the time when I bid on jobs. And every time I learn a lesson about how I could have done a better job of bidding. I constantly reference your advice on good business relationships––good communication based on respect all on a foundation of trust. This is my North Star in business.

Have a wonderful week!  And thank you for the encouragement!!!

((hugs))”

- Steph Zhong, Creative Director- “Hi Tony, Happy belated 2018! Hope your year is off to a great start.

I wanted to share the release of a new online magazine/community I created called Zim Zum (http://www.zimzum.us). Thanks in part to taking your class, I was able to merge my love of storytelling, graphic design into a project meant to counter the rising culture of hate and intolerance we live in today.

This is an online place where people can come to restore their faith in humanity. By discovering or sharing stories of people who find love, friendship, connection, healing in unlikely places–with people they originally perceived as too 'different from them."

We're currently running a call for stories and invite past classmates to pitch stories (in any medium) for publication. The pitch guide is here, http://www.zimzum.us/pitch-us.

Above all, thank you Tony. You pushed me to find a way to make my passion for storytelling and design into a career. I'm on my way.

Hugs,”

About Us: Restore your faith in humanity, love what makes you different and connect with people from all walks of life. Zim Zum is a destination for stories to counter the rising tide of hate speech, fake news and screaming heads. Come to read, watch, or listen to stories of people stepping out of their comfort zones to meet someone they might not normally connect with. By curating these stories together in one place, we remind ourselves that humans are fundamentally compassionate, generous, teachable and giving. And if you’re looking to expand your perceptions of others, lighten up your bias, and own who you are, this is a safe and encouraging place to grow.

- Percival Carino, Graphic Designer- “Happy Monday, I finished the LA Marathon at 4:02. This was a testimony to my hard work and the love and support I have from my partner, family and friends that believed in me. Last year I finished the marathon at 4:58 mins. I shaved 56 mins from last year to this year and this clearly tells me a lot of what my capacity is not just from my personal work ethic but also on the things I am passionate about. I am excited to discover more about myself and the new chapter I am opening. I am very blessed, honored to share this with all of you as this was unexpected and I am so proud of my efforts.

Thank you and see you guys Tuesday night (in class).”

- Karen Lau, Creative Director- “Hey Tony- How are you?
Was wondering if you know any producers/production company that would be a good partner for me to work with on Veterans Administration Public Service Announcements, VA PSA’s.
I’m in the market to look for a new partner. They have to be good people…wanting to work for a good cause or they will become resentful of all the paperwork and bureaucracy.

Hope you are well!

Cheers,”

I wanted to let you know of a couple of updates for me. I love reading about everyone else. I started back at college last week at Pasadena City College. I’m studying for my Associates Degree to jump over with a transfer to USC or Cal State University to finish my BA in either Linguistics or Political Science. I’m really enjoying it so far. We already have tests and exams happening this week. It’s quite a change.

Speak soon,”

Tony Luna Creative- Update- 2-28-2018

HERE ARE THE HEADLINES WHICH ARE FOLLOWED BY THE COMPLETE STORIES…

- Michele Mattei sent a beautiful image she created in recognition of Valentine’s Day. Though the holiday has past we can all enjoy her lovely image and the reminder that beauty is all around us throughout the year…

- Erv Nichols and Sandra Noll update us on how they are reinventing their careers by letting us know that they are the subjects of a short film being produced by the Mother Nature Network. Stay tuned for more information…

- Sarah Ellis was highlighted in a recent edition of ArtCenter’s “Storyboard: Mapping Scenes from a Creative Life” and she eloquently delivers a retrospective of her life as a Marine and as an ArtCenter student. Sarah, we acknowledge you and your Mom, Alvalyn Lundgren, for your contributions and we wish you the best as you move forward…

- Bill Wishner informs us that his new images from “Art of the City Wall” are on display at the Forest & Ocean Gallery, 480 Ocean Avenue, Laguna Beach, CA. His show will be running until March 11 and we invite you to come out and support his artistry…

- Peter Van Law invites us to read his last three blogs in his series “For the Life of Me” which Pete describes as “the emotional discovery of a man’s hidden Jewish heritage.” This latest entry describes his association with the late Ralph Hirsch, “who was so instrumental in helping me research my family.” Anyone who is interested in discovering their roots will find this body of work intriguing…

- Andrea McCarthy once again has generously sent in a new list of job opportunities at institutions of higher learning in the United States and around the world through Academic Keys. The list included in this blog has been edited for space and information on more opportunities can be gained by going to their Facebook link…

- Erv Nichols and Sandra Noll, Nature Heroes- Update on our reinventing careers…

“Here's Sandra preparing for our interviews (5 hrs!) for a short film being produced for MMN.com, Mother Nature Network. It's our 15 minutes of fame-actually 10 or so- about people with a passion for cranes. It was all very professionally done and, actually a lot of fun! Should be ready for view in a month or so. Stay tuned.”

Editor’s note: The following was first published in ArtCenter College of Design’s “Storyboard: Mapping Scenes from a Creative Life” a behind the scenes series by members of the ArtCenter community. I have had the honor of working both with Sarah Ellis and her mother, Alvalyn Lundgren, and find them to be two strong, talented, and inspiring women and thus we are privileged to include this essay in this issue.

- Sarah Ellis, Photographer-

- Dear ArtCenter Friends and Family,

My mom was an ArtCenter illustration major who graduated in 1978. She took me to see the student galleries as early as when I was a year and a half old. By the time I was six, ArtCenter became a place I understood to be important in her life.

The possibility that it would play a role in my life was remote. I came from a single-mother household where money was tight. As I grew up with ArtCenter on my radar, I knew that my mom couldn’t afford to put me through college and that – if I really wanted to attend this magical place called ArtCenter – I would have to do it on my own terms.

I’ve liked taking pictures ever since I got my very own camera at the age of twelve. I took it with me everywhere, from school to road trips with my family. Even as a kid, it was always about more than just taking a pretty picture – there was a larger, more abstract truth I was trying to wrestle with, one that I couldn’t fully put into words yet. At a college recruitment fair during my junior year of high school, I got to talking with someone about enlisting in the Marine Corps. I just knew that I had to seize control of my fate. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about ArtCenter, though as I since learned, the school has a rich and     well-documented history with its veteran alumni.

I was enlisted in the Marine Corps boot camp from July 10th to October 6th of 2006. It was often hellish. The toll it takes on you can be considerable. And yet, my fellow Marines and I ended up bonding off of the experience we shared – somehow, we had managed to graduate from this unforgiving place alive and in one piece. You tend to see people’s true colors with great clarity when you’re trapped in a foxhole     with them, and there is no truer manifestation of that credo than the Marine Corps.

In the Corps, we ascribe very much to the philosophy of “one body, one spirit.” You are trained to look out for your fellow man or woman. It’s not easy, but no path to greatness ever comes from being selfish– nor does it come from convenience. I entered into the Marine Corps as a caterpillar and emerged a butterfly – albeit one who was coated in mud, sweat and tears. A lot of that Marine Corps mentality has transferred over to my time at ArtCenter. Though I don’t make comparisons to military service with any degree of lightness, there is in fact, an overlap between the two pursuits.

Like the Corps, ArtCenter requires that you be orderly and disciplined, giving 110% of yourself each and every day. Throughout the various trials and tests of endurance, you develop a family of sorts. Maybe you don’t think about it as much while it’s happening, but as you get closer to graduation you start to think “I’m going to be calling that person at some point down the line and asking them for a favor.”
Through my output, I try to strike a balance between work that is both commercial and deeply personal. In many cases, the former helps to pay for the latter. In my photography series “Project V,” I examine the metaphorical concept of the “masks” that veterans must wear when they re-integrate back to society. In the civilian world it’s hard to find an equivalent to the automatic brotherhood or sisterhood I found in the Marines – you’re on your own, and if you want something, you’re going to have to get it yourself. Civilians can’t really understand where we come from unless they experience it themselves.

The same is true of my ArtCenter community. There is a sacred connection that is only experienced here that the outside world may never get a full glimpse of. I haven’t even turned thirty yet and somehow     I’ve managed to survive both ArtCenter and the Marine Corps. Some days, I can’t decide which one was more demanding.

    Yours truly,
    Sarah Ellis
    ArtCenter Student, Photography

- Pete VanLaw, Producer, Filmmaker- From “For the Life of Me” which Pete describes as “the emotional discovery of a man’s hidden Jewish heritage.” These stories complement his production concerning his incredible journey  and he writes, “We welcome your donations to help us finish the film, and get it out to schools and religious institutions…” through the IDA, International Documentary Association, website

In Case you missed any of my last three blogs, here they are: The most recent is called…  https://forthelifeofme-film.com/2018/01/11/rendezvous-in-hannover/
“It was 2005 when my wife and I were in Berlin at the tail end of a trip that had taken us through the Italian Lakes country, and then on to Berlin to meet my cousin, Helen and her family.
My cousin, Helen 2 or her 3 boys, and husband, Colin at the Hard Rock Cafe. They were flying in from London. We spent a number of delightful days together, exploring the city, from the Jewish Museum to Berlin’s Hard Rock Cafe and points in-between.
After Helen and her family left to return home, I made arrangements to meet my German friend, Ralph, in Hannover, since he lived nearby in Celle. My ideal schedule was first to spend the morning exploring where my parents lived, before they came to America. And then we would go on to meet Ralph and his wife someplace of his choosing, for afternoon tea.
I phoned him from our hotel room for instructions on how and where to meet. He suggested that we take the morning express to Hannover that leaves Berlin at 9:30am. Then we should meet at the Wilhelm Busch Museum, and have tea outdoors in their lovely garden. Ralph assured me that it should take less than two hours, since Hannover is only 180 miles or so from Berlin. We could get our tickets once we got to the station. All we had to do was go to one of the many kiosks located in the main lobby.
‘Easy peasy’! Right?
WRONG!!!”

Harvey and John Chua on the far right with photography students.

We are grateful to you both for your inspiration, dedication, and passion...

- Regarding John Chua and Harvey Chua- It is with great sadness that I relay the news that renowned photographer John Chua has passed away. He has not only inspired talented young photographers in his home country of the Philippines but he instituted many advocacy groups which, among others, serve children with special needs and persons with disabilities, indigenous people, and people yearning to follow their passion. John, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His loving wife and business partner needs our support through these tough times. We must remember to celebrate his accomplishments by reaching out, in our own unique ways, to help others each and every day…

John and Harvey Chua with Tony Luna during a visit to Art Center in 2010.

- John Chua and Harvey Chua-

(The following is an excerpt from the Inquirer.net article by reporter Jhesset O. Enano on the life of beloved photographer John Chua:
One of the country’s leading figures in photography, Chua passed away on Jan. 6 after a long battle with colon cancer. His ashes were interred at Heritage Memorial Park. He was 69. A self-taught photographer whose career spanned over four decades, Chua was considered a pillar in different genres of photography, including advertising, industrial and aerial work, and earned the moniker ‘Magic Eye.’”

Mrs. Harvey Chua wrote the following: ‘Thank you. We’re continuing to be showered with love from so many people who loved John.

We will continue to do his advocacies, and put up exhibits of his photos - on the Ifugaos and the famed Banaue Rice Terraces, his aerial photos plus photos of his cross-country ultralight flight, his advertising works, and of activities he did for special children and persons with disabilities.

As a self-taught photographer (he only finished high school), he was very impressed with your school. He appreciated the help that you extended to me when I started teaching “Business of Photography,” and “Marketing Strategies for Photographers…”

G-nie, our photographer who has been with us for 25 years, will continue with Adphoto. I hope to continue sending updates on Adphoto and G-nie’s works. I hope to continue receiving updates from you.

Best regards,”
Harvey

 - From Jenn Julian, Producer, Presentation Coach- “Sir Tony! Great to hear from you as always. …Last time we spoke, I told you I was about to teach my first pitch coaching session.  I just wanted to say thanks so much for your insight and help in structure around that.  The session went very well and the client felt he got a lot of value!

Also, wanted to share some fun news –  in Hollywood, if it’s in the trades, it’s official…and it’s in the trades!"

https://www.screendaily.com/news/june-bug-pictures-launches-following-afm/5124224.article

(The following are excerpts from the Screendaily.com article)
AFM pitch conference aces launch June Bug Pictures
By Elbert Wyche 14 November 2017
Jennifer Julian and Holly Payberg have launched June Bug Pictures after two consecutive years of runner-up wins at the AFM Pitch Conference.
Producer and partner Julian pitched Free Hunter this year, which centers on the first and greatest female fighter pilot in history. In 2016 she pitched Marlene, about 1920s German cabaret star and Hollywood film icon Marlene Dietrich.
…Both projects are being packaged by Jon Levin at Roar, with production counsel handled by Ann Clark at Greenberg-Traurig. The companies plan to begin production in mid-2018.
June Bug was launched with the goal of developing inspired, thought-provoking, female-driven content for film, television and the digital space. ”Like June bugs, we are curious creatures, deeply inquisitive and just a little bit lovingly in your face, especially when shepherding the stories we believe in. At a time when this important shake-up is happening in Hollywood, we’re proud knowing we do what we do with enthusiasm and integrity,” Julian said.
Best,
Jen

CHEERS TO ONE YEAR IN BUSINESS!

What we’re looking forward to in 2018, and our gift for you!
Looking back on this first year, I’m filled with so much pride. As many of you know, when I started, I had just left my job with General Assembly, had no concrete plan in place, and not clients, and OH YEAH, I was 1 month pregnant at the time. Get the full story on my startup via my interview with Business Rockstars https://www.facebook.com/bizrockstars/videos/1531435646938028/?hc_ref=ARR03mgikmKAj5ra9diQW0ibXzWG2srLw1yhZiS2qGrSWTW7nBCRpaGG4q0rDRnJIhk&fref=gs&hc_location=group
Now I’m happy to say that our boutique branding studio is thriving. I work with an amazing team of freelance creatives (graphic designers, copywriters, photographers, and soon videographers). We’ve worked with wonderful clients that I’m happy to promote. And we have so much in the pipeline for 2018! Here’s some goodies we have to share!

My Gift to You
I’m so humbled by all of the love and support I’ve received this year. As a thank you, I’ve created some beautiful desktop calendars to bring a little cheer to your work all year long! Get your gift here, http://www.robynyoung.co/calendars

Branding Bootcamp
Get your brand set up for success in the New Year with the full day, hands-on Brand Like a Boss Bootcamp http://www.robynyoung.co/branding-bootcamp/
We’ll take you through the key elements of creating a brand that connects: strategy, story-telling, and your digital presence.

- From Dana Walker, Director of ArtCenter at Night Public Programs-

Dear Public Programs faculty: ArtCenter College of Design is excited to announce the launch of a brand new program track in Game Design, beginning with a first entering class in Fall 2018. A natural extension of the incredible work Entertainment Design students learn to create as concept designers and animators, the Game Design Track expands our students’ capacities to design the stories that shape, engage, and thrill our culture.

As an Entertainment Design student in the Game Design track you will focus on acquiring the technical skills necessary for competency in game design; gaining fluency in the phases of the production process; learning how to navigate between artistic expression, programming and design languages; and developing your ability to identify, understand and solve a client’s design problems.

This program is part of ArtCenter’s full-time undergraduate program. Applications are currently being accepted and will continue to be accepted on an as-room-is-available basis until the program is full.

For more information, download the information sheet or call ArtCenter’s Admissions Office at 626.396.2373 or admissions@artcenter.edu

Sometimes, when we’re looking closely enough, time stands still,
reminding us to stay grounded.
There are few people I’ve met who are as present and in the moment as Ray.
The tragic accident that paralyzed his body has empowered him to move beyond the things
we take for granted, like crossing the street, and to accomplish tremendous feats of
incredible athletic ABILITY.
We are all fighting battles, but there are few heroes like Ray who raise the bar and through
their triumphs, help us to change perspective.

My series of 10 photos helps to tell his remarkable story

Also, if you're interested in getting gifts for loved ones, I'm selling some of my art on t-shirts:
http://www.inna2nd.threadless.com

Another thing that might be interesting to mention, every Friday, I do something called #FreeBeeeFriday where I draw an original piece of artwork on a 5"x7" piece of cardboard and hide it somewhere in the city...any city...anywhere...I leave pretty self-explanatory hints on my instagram (@inna2nd). I've hidden them in Orange County to Sacramento to Amsterdam to Italy.

Have a great weekend!

- Editor’s note: We have recently received several requests from people on our mailing list regarding either starting, or joining existing meet-up groups for creative individuals. One of the challenges of being in the creative fields is that we often operate in isolation and we seldom have an opportunity to meet up with other like-minded people who wish to share their stories and be mutually helpful. The groups could be casual coffee meet-ups, or more industry specific, or anything in between. If you are interested in either starting a group or joining an existing group, don’t be shy, just email tony@tonylunacreative.com and your requests will be passed along, or with your permission, posted in this blog. It would be a great way to find your tribe, and how we can encourage each other to continue creatively growing and doing what we LOVE to do!

IMG_5534.jpg

The group meet-up pictured above meets every Tuesday 4:30 to 6:00 when Art Center classes are in session. The group covers a wide variety of creative topics, and provides support by passing along important information while attempting to solve the world’s problems at Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 South Raymond Avenue, Pasadena. Come and join us if you are interested in meeting some of the people that inspire me on a weekly basis.

- Tony Luna Creative has a new website! After years of looking for ways to bring the web site up to date we are happy to say the TLC website it is now up and running. Big thanks go to the creative genius of individual sports and adventure photographer/director Justin Bastien, with technical assistance by Trevor Spruit. Thanks to them both for their guidance and expertise the web site and blog are in one easy to navigate location. This allows anyone who wishes to get the whole picture of what is offered convenient access to the support, inspiration, and networking offered.

One special note. The photo chosen for the home page was taken by Crafting a Meaningful Career alum Chuck Chugumlung after a lecture for Innovate Pasadena/Design X last year. You will notice that one of the people in the photo is our gracious friend and inspiration Dr. Soren Petersen who has since passed away. This photo was purposely selected in homage to his vitality and love for all things creative. The use of this photo is in his honor and brings us joy in remembering his friendship.

- Amy Gaskin, Photojournalist- “Hi Tony, Wonderful to hear from you! Thank you so much for writing.....yes, those are my shots.....cannot believe both of my images were chosen....such an honor.

I've been away from photography a bit…  but am now back in the swing of things.  Trying to catch up and dig out of the backlog.
One of my shots chosen by APA is currently on billboards and buses throughout Los Angeles.   A bit surreal, but fun…

Warm regards,

Amy

Open Mind Art Space is pleased to present THEIA MANIA, a solo exhibition featuring mixed media works by Faria Raji. An opening reception will be held for the artist on Saturday, July 29th from 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM. The exhibition will be on view from July 29th through August 25th.

Faria Raji’s works are at once visceral and ephemeral the notion that amidst decay and misery the only vision that radiates promise is the figurative form. Rooted in the tradition of photography pieces go beyond the photograph; he destroys the surface of the images we selectively applying texture and impasto paint.

As individual photos uniquely call for. Raji will mark, burn, score, deface, paint, and modify each print to heighten and clarify its language.

In his most recent grouping of works titled THEIA MANIA, a Greek term meaning "divine madness from the Gods,” Raji utilizes photography and various construction methodologies to create worlds in which naked nymphs inhabit mysterious erotic realms. His artwork lives in a continuum where the dust of love and erotic desire has not yet settled. Raji attempts to immortalize the energy of life, a brief moment of enlightenment experienced at the time of ecstasy which produces a temporary loss of consciousness as every cell fires in unison.

The Story Behind the Bridge

Latitude: 34.134694 | Longitude: -118.166037

Originally named the Huntington Terrace Bridge when first dedicated in 1914, the name was changed within just a few years to the

La Loma Bridge

when La Loma Road received its new name. Re-creation of historic design features including the handsome balustrade, light standards and globes, were part of the recent restoration project and have brought the bridge back to its original appearance. Thank you’s are in order to the members of the volunteer Design Advisory Committee, including Ann Scheid, Chris Peck, Andrea Rawlings, Robin Salzer, Michael Krakower, Jesse Lattig, and Sue Mossman in overseeing the many nuances of the design, historic details, materials and finishes. The next seismic upgrade planned is for the Holly Street Bridge and will begin soon.

- Randii Oliver, Shamanic Fine Artist- “Hi Tony, I'm stunned and I need to share!!!!!  I just found out that some of my early digital artwork is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, as part of a Digital Art collection that was gifted by art historian, Patric Prince. Patric is an old friend of mine whom I have lost touch with. She taught at Cal State LA, when I was a grad student there, and I was in several seminal digital art shows that she curated. I helped to run the Cyberspace Gallery in Los Angeles at it's inception in 1991, which she co-created with Michael Masucci.

I've been hidden away for so long!!!!!!! Never did I expect to have my artwork in a museum as part of the history of Computer Graphics! WOW!!!!!!!!!  I’m SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!  LOL!!!!!”

(And in a follow-up email…)

“Hi Tony, Attached is my digital image, ‘Mann’, which is one of the images included in the Victoria and Albert Museum permanent collection…   I also have the dates for the Hastings Branch Library show in Pasadena:”

Why?

I’ve started a brand strategy studio, http://www.robynyoung.co/, and looking to get the word out with the people I value most; my personal network. To celebrate, I’m inviting you to meet me for coffee in person to play catch up!

For the next three weeks, I’m scheduling individual meet-ups with a all of my Los Angeles based contacts in person (or via conference call for anyone out of the area or unable to meet) to catch up on what you are up to and tell you about my business in the hopes that we can create some synergy. No obligations, no expectations, just a chance for some face time.

My Gift To You

To make this meet-up even sweeter for you, I’ll gift you a free day of co-working at this INCREDIBLE co-working space, https://www.industriousoffice.com/locations/losangeles/, just for taking the time to meet with me! (Editor’s note: The following Memorial article in honor of our dear colleague and friend Soren Petersen by Charley W. Bush, appeared in the Huffington Post, June 2.)

Soren Ingomar Petersen: One of the great design pioneers and mentors of our generation
In honor of Soren, this will be under 1000 words: short, joyful, and honest.
Soren, of course would have taken closer to 10,000 words. In Soren’s case all those words have been a testament to his generosity and joy in collaborating with people. I am now not just a better design researcher. Because of Soren I am kinder, more capable of experiencing joy, and have seen, first hand, what it takes to make a positive dent in the universe.
Soren accomplished more in his life than anyone thought he was capable of. As a dyslexic child in Denmark, he was told he was too “dumb” to go to school. His final position was as Dean of Academic Affairs at Niels Brock International, Denmark’s oldest and most recognized business school. I once asked him what positive changes he felt responsible for. I’ve done my best to remember what he said:
He first mentioned being on the team that created the first, non-military, Heads-Up-Displays [HUD] for race car drivers. In an effort to improve the safety of his team’s driver he laid the groundwork for what we call Augmented or Virtual Reality. Soren’ simply said, “I worked on the first Heads-Up-Display… That was so cool, I got to meet Ralf Schumacher!”
The second thing he said he was proud of was his work validating design’s impact on business. This is modest. Soren was to design what Steve Wozniak was to computers. After receiving a degree in both engineering and design, he spent over three decades researching design, (10 years working at BMW), and received a PhD from Stanford in Design Quantification. When Soren began his career, design was seen as a disposable service. While many people helped make it essential to business, very few could show how. By studying successful methods from design, engineering and business, Soren created an algorithm able to predict an entrepreneur’s chances of receiving initial funding that was accurate close to 80% of the time. Soren validated that design was a quantifiable science as well as an art form.
Soren and his wife, Marysia, began “Crowd-sourcing” long before the term was coined. In the days when computers were green type on black screens, he came across an automobile chat room and became fascinated with the way people shared things and collected feedback for a car company he was working for. One day after hours of waiting for someone to mention his company, he said he was about to give up when Marysia came in to let him know dinner was ready. After he explained what he was trying to do, she asked if she could add a comment. Marysia jumped on the computer and asked what people thought of his company. Then they went to eat. When he returned to the screen, hundreds of comments awaited. The car company wasn’t quite prepared to hear how much customers disliked their cars, but Soren pioneered part of what would eventually become CrowdSourcing

Velvette De Laney, Principal Designer & Owner l dewdropstudios- “Hi Tony, Here's my post-graduation blurb…Hi fellow Schmoozfesters! I hope you're all well.

I did it! I completed my Master of Fine Arts degree in Design Research and Development this month at OSU. I'm now working on getting Venture Capital funding to turn my thesis research into a tech start-up. The research was initially on developing a tool to help Graphic Designers become more environmentally sustainable in their practice. I then developed a Journey Map that articulates a path that Designers, Clients. Vendors, and other stakeholders can take to become more sustainable. Since graduating, I've refocused the tool to help environmental managers of larger companies manage print projects. Fingers crossed I'll have really good news to report the next time I attend a Schmoozfest! I'll be staying in town for a while (rent is cheap and Columbus isn't so bad - there are a lot of hairy hipsters, though!), but I hope one day to move back home. Meanwhile, someone please give both Tony and Paula a big hug for me!”

Editor’s Note: It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of our good friend and colleague, Soren Petersen. Soren will be remembered for his enthusiasm, intelligence, and wit, and for his spirited presentations of his complex analytics at our SchmoozeFests. He inspired all who were honored to know him and I for one will miss our robust brainstorming conversations over coffee. The following is a copy of an email his wife, Maryisa, sent informing of the memorial scheduled in celebration of his life. Please join us to remember this wonderful man who brought us much joy and encouraged us to achieve the best we have to offer.

- "In Memoriam- Soren Petersen

As a tribute to Soren and to all those who loved him...

There will be a memorial service held at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ca, on Saturday, May 13th, at 12N in the Sculpture Garden.

Please let other friends and colleagues know of the scheduled memorial who might wish to attend as I may not have all contacts.

Love,"

From SCBWI’s “Kite Tales” newsletter, Posted by Sarah Parker-Lee, Managing Co-Editor in Contests and Grants, Mentorship Contest:
Long-time SCBWI member Carmel O’Mara-Horwitz submitted this year’s winning proposal to mentor an illustrator in the art of building a portfolio for the children’s book market. The contest to pick her mentee from among our Associate and Full members begins January 3, 2017.
The six-month mentorship, which runs May 1–Oct. 30, 2017, will help the chosen illustrator to evaluate and improve the art in their portfolio and to create a couple new pieces as necessary. O’Mara-Horwitz will focus the mentee’s learning on the following:
    •    Understanding the difference between making fine art or a single drawing versus storytelling with character development for a picture book – and how to convey this understanding in a portfolio
    •    Discovering and understanding the audience for a successful picture book
    •    Understanding book construction, pacing, and layout and how to convey this in a portfolio
    •    Exploring the different platforms for storytelling such as pop-up book construction, apps and digital media

- Ann Song- “Hi Tony, Hope all is well! Agnes Carrera introduced us a while back and I was asking her if she happened to know of a talented videographer [with some experience] who might be interested in creating a 4 part pilot video series that I'm working on called "In Studio With..."

Each 10 minute video would be an in studio visit with an LA fashion designer. Aesthetically and visually and editing wise, I was thinking about something like the following examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilb42VdWFGQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn-S95icfbc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdMH9amLu2Q
I'm interested in finding someone who might be interested in doing this first series for credit [and to receive exposure on our websites and through social media promotion]...

The goal would be to eventually get sponsors and then continue to create more series...which I would then like to continue working with the videographer and work out a fee...

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you happen to know of anyone...?

All my best,

Ann

To win the game, you must prove once and for all that YOU are the best wizard by having the most influence over the ritual at its completion.

According to the Kickstarter link Ritual now proclaims “188 backers pledged $45,373 to help bring this project to life” exceeding expectations! Way to go Primo! We wish you all the luck in the world with your new board game.

- Gail Howland, Photographer, Faculty, ArtCenter for Kids- (Editor’s Note: the following are excerpts from an ArtCenter College of Design’s “Storyboard” article:)

Dear Friends of ArtCenter,
When I told my colleagues that I was considering getting my second degree at ArtCenter College of Design, some of them couldn’t quite wrap their head around the concept. They were familiar with ArtCenter and were aware of its reputation of having a demanding standard along with an intense curriculum. I certainly don’t remember having as heavy a workload during my undergraduate tenure at Berkeley.

There’s a reason that students come from all over the country to attend classes here. And it's not just rigor for the sake of rigor alone – far from it. Rather, it is this simple fact: when you leave ArtCenter, you feel like you can do anything – because, in a way, you can. Looking back, like so many of my peers who eventually ended up at ArtCenter, the seeds for my life as a creative were planted early. I knew I wasn’t interested in science or math – it was performing and the world of visual arts that fascinated me. It took a while to figure out what I was good at. I began studying ballet at a young age and eventually majored in Art History, both passions that I continue to explore to this day. After graduation, I came to discover what would be my defining passion and creative preoccupation: photography. I began by taking images of artists on stage before eventually focusing my concentration on portraiture. The idea that this could be a viable career option hadn’t occurred to me yet – it was initially a creative endeavor that I simply felt compelled to participate in.

ArtCenter taught me there was a career in photography. The College also provided a sort of meeting ground where I could interact with like-minded individuals who shared my same creative priorities and preoccupations. Over the years, one of my greatest joys has been being connected with the amazing folks who make up our alumni population. To call myself lucky in this regard would be an understatement.

Currently, I’m faculty in the ArtCenter for Kids program where I have been teaching black-and-white photography to children ages 10-14. It’s an incredible process to witness these young students, many of whom are operating from a place of pure artistic creation. They’re not old enough yet to know what the world thinks of them or their art, and thus, that preconception doesn’t color the work itself. Proper schooling and the quote-unquote ‘way to do things’ take a backseat to imagination and outside-the-box thinking...

Ultimately, it takes a lot of non-creative work to be a creative. Taking an art class should be as essential as taking a math or science class because it teaches you how to build a perspective. Giving these young people the tool kit necessary to forge their own creative point of view is truly gratifying. That same sensation I experienced all those years ago – that feeling that I could do anything – is something I see blossoming in the minds of my students, day in and day out. I hope you will consider supporting ArtCenter so these young artists may continue developing their creative perspectives.

Yours truly,
Gail Howland

- Pete Van Law, Producer, Documentary Filmmaker- What will the Natzler’s Treasures Reveal?

“I thought I’d exhausted the subject of the Natzlers and moved on to stories of my other relatives’ along with personal stories from a number of our readers.
But then a few a few months ago I got a cryptic email from a stranger named David D. In it he said that he had inherited some of Marlies Natzler’s photos, letters and more, all stored in a garage in West Los Angeles. He asked if I would be interested in seeing them. “Yes, of course”, I said, with a level of growing enthusiasm. Ever since I rediscovered Marlies Natzler, I found more questions about her family’s history than I found answers. So, I jumped at the opportunity.”
