First off, wishing you a Happy Birthday!!! 🎉🎂 And for that, I wanted to touch back with you as always with some news that is my gift to you. As of today, it is now official. I just completed my days of orientation and I am now a student of New York Film Academy, a candidate for a Master's in Cinematography. I have met a lot of wonderful people and new peers from all across the world and the nation in just a matter of a few hours, and I am very excited to be joining a new school and finally pursuing the dream and entering the film industry. Of course, I have some photos to share with you on what I experienced:”

- Al Satterwhite, The Cozumel Diary - Hunter Thompson in Mexico
Al Satterwhite is a veteran photographer who has been published in major magazines such as Life, Time, Sports Illustrated. Published photographic books of his work include the Cozumel Diary (Hunter Thompson in Mexico). Satterwhite in Color & Design, Lights! Camera! Advertising!, the Racers, Titans (Muhammad Ali & Arnold Schwarzenegger). He’s currently working on two more books, Southern Exposure and aRound New York. HIs photographic prints are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, LACMA, George Eastman House and numerous private collections. The Smithsonian showcased his work in 2014 in American Cool. Satterwhite lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two Zen-Masters, both of them cats.

Hunter and Al become fast friends in the early 70s when they met while each covering the 1972 Republican Convention for different magazines. When Playboy Magazine decided to interview Hunter in Cozumel, Mexico Hunter asked Playboy to send Al as the story photographer. After the initial interview, Hunter wanted to hang out in Cozumel and convinced Al to stay a few extra days, not that he needed much convincing. The quest to visit every island bar was their sole agenda. After Cozumel Hunter and Al remained friends, often visiting one another. Satterwhite’s collection of images from their time in Cozumel, along with stories of their adventures in Florida including when Hunter would come down to Miami to write about President Nixon, are presented here.

- Charley Allen, Photographer, Book Publisher- “Hi Tony, Yesterday we had a meeting with the author and the illustrator of a children’s book… We were discussing materials, the construction, and the printing techniques for various elements such as; the cover material, the dust jacket printing techniques, the end sheet content and printing colors, the sleeve slipcase material, foil stamping, etc. We were also showing samples of books we have done where various different techniques were used.

When we were done our conference table was a mess and jumble of sample swatch books, our previously printed books, Pantone ink color swatches, and even the empty beverages we had consumed. Although this is a rather common situation around our studio, for some strange reason, I decided to photograph it and now want to share it. The creative process, more often than not is a messy affair with threads going this way and that before a decision is made. Please see the photo below and feel free to share it on your blog. P.S. Nothing was moved, styled, or art directed before this was taken. This is a real-life unscripted mess. :-) “

January 4th - Project XV - New Perspectives on Photography opens at the new Los Angeles Center of Photography. Saturday night, LACP has their grand opening which big name galleries will be showing, but I have a couple of Street Photographs, that will be hanging in one of the classrooms, I believe :).

And January 25th I am part of Perceive Me by Kristine Schomaker which is at Cal State LA and it will tour! Kristine came up with a very vulnerable idea and acted upon it. She asked 60 plus artists to create art using her nude body, any way they wanted. I was thrilled to be asked to participate.

- GARRISSON PENA, Photographer, Visual Artist- “Hi Tony…, I hope you are doing well and wanted to give you updates on everything that has happened recently.

As I mentioned on my last post, for Thanksgiving Week, I went on a photo trip (and vacation, of course!) from desert to ocean. Specifically, Lone Pine and Death Valley to the Monterey Peninsula… Honestly, Death Valley feels like another planet with the alien-like mountains that surround the landscape and how unbelievably quiet it is… On the other hand, Lone Pine is a hidden gem in California and is situated against one of the most beautiful backdrops: The Eastern Sierra Nevada. I woke-up at 4AM to drive to Alabama Hills as I did time lapse and flew the drone to capture the sunrise. It was stunning and unreal to watch the sun drape across the Sierra Nevada and the fiery alpenglow. This is a photo of that special moment when the alpenglow was at it’s best.

After my time in the desert, I swung across the state to the Monterey Peninsula where I spent the rest of my time relaxing and doing seascapes. I spent afternoons on the 17 Mile Drive as I wanted to continue doing time lapse photography at numerous viewpoints and flew my drone at Asilomar State Beach to capture the crashing waves... Overall, one of my favorite trips and vacations in a while, and one much needed.

And with that, I have some great news that I want to share with you as it has been one of our talking points for a while. For the past few weeks I have been engaged in completing the admissions process of writing essays, requesting transcript, portfolio submissions, and letters of recommendation. And I want to thank you for taking the time to write me a letter as it has gone a long way and now it has paid off. On Thursday afternoon, I received a letter from the office of admissions and I am proud to announce that I have been accepted as a Spring 2020 admit to New York Film Academy in pursuing a Master’s of Fine Arts in Cinematography. And just like that, life feels so surreal and is now a dream come true I begin this next chapter.

This has been my goal in life. I want to have a career in the film and I have checked-off one part of the journey which was completing my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Photography. And of course, you are a part of it and have been an integral part in all of this. I am proud to call you one of my close mentors. Spring Semester for New York Film Academy starts in February and with it being only a month away, I am ready to get back to work and back in flow. The time between graduating Art Center and receiving my acceptance letter has allowed me to rejuvenate and refocus. Now I am chasing my longtime life goal, ever since I was first introduced to movies: The Academy Award for Cinematography.

Today, I have some good news.

1) Netflix movie Earthquake Bird will be released in November at last. I worked as a Japanese Language Post Production Coach in November 2018 to February 2019, but the film was shot in June 2017 in Japan. Below is the link to the trailer. I haven’t seen the final version so I’m hoping they didn’t make a lot of changes after I was finished with the project. You’ll never know...

Working on Earthquake Bird was the best experience I’ve ever had in the industry. I believe that was a gift from the Universe.

I was lucky enough to have an agent negotiating my terms and clearly saw the difference in the way the post production house treated me. I’ve never been given such power to nitpick and perfect Japanese dialogues; the director was a perfectionist, but a nice and humble kind. I got respect not only from the director but also from the people I worked with closely. That was the job of my dreams!

2) I still write TV reviews both in English and Japanese. Honestly, I enjoy writing in English these days.

Fall SchmoozeFest! On Thursday, September 5 a group of about a dozen enthusiastic creative talent assembled at the Art Center Extension building, 950 South Raymond Ave., Pasadena for the Fall SchmoozeFest!. This was the last SchmoozeFest! of 2019, but don’t worry, you can catch the next one on Thursday, January 16, 2020. Presentations were delivered by several of the attendees who showed their amazing artwork, and that was followed by a networking sessions with participants exchanging ideas, and business cards. We would love to have you attend the next event so mark your calendars and we will see you in the new year.

The fall Crafting a Meaningful Career class has gotten off to a great start with inspired members displaying examples of the work they have done in the past they enjoyed creating the most. -Garrisson Pena, Photographer- “Hi Tony, Garrisson here and back! With a new term finally underway, I was thinking of you the other day and as usual, would love to keep you posted on stuff that’s been going on.

First off, I’d like to say that I appreciate and thank you for spotlighting me on your blog as reading it and looking at makes me feel sentimental and proud of being an Art Center graduate. I thank you for that and I love to share that with the rest of the world.

As part of my updates, the new image above is one of my favorite drone shots as of yet, entitled: Breathe. I took this photo in Cambria, CA at Moonstone Beach. Cambria is a great, quaint little town along the Central California Coast for a great getaway and just to recharge. For me, it was a chance to, Breathe.

Second, I am looking to take another step towards drone and fine-art landscape photography. For the past two months, I have been doing a lot of research such as buying maps of different countries around the world and beginning the process of planning out future travels of what I would call: photo odysseys. As a teaser of this list, places that I want to travel to are Iceland, Norway, Italy, and French Polynesia. Before committing to any of those places, I want to burst right out of the gate with practicing this process in my own backyard of California. This November, during the Thanksgiving Week, I will be traveling to Death Valley National Park and then to the Monterey Peninsula. In Death Valley, I plan to shoot and spend a lot of time at the sand dunes. After DV, I will be in Monterey to harness opportunities with my drone along the pristine coastlines of Pebble Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Both places I have been looking forward to going back to for some time, as now with a lot of experience under my belt, I will have fresh eyes to work with and look for things I didn’t see last time around.

And finally, I just celebrated the 50 Year Anniversary of Abbey Road. So I went all out and channeled my Beatles spirit by donning my Abbey Road t-shirt, drank out of my Abbey Road mug, and wired-in to listen to both the original album and the new 2019 remix album. Can’t believe we have reached 50 years celebrating one of the greatest albums of all time. My favorite songs on the album are I Want You (She’s So Heavy), Because, and Golden Slumbers. Great time to be a Beatlemaniac.

As always, I enjoy my conversations with you and can’t wait to see where life leads me. Hearing back from you and allowing me to share my stories because they are only extra motivation and incentive that keeps that spark going.

I hope all is well and hope your new round of students in both presentation classes is off to an excellent start.

- BIG NEWS- Name Change: ArtCenter at Night = ArtCenter Extension!

Have you heard the news? ArtCenter College of Design’s non-degree programs—ArtCenter at Night, ArtCenter for Teens, ArtCenter for Kids and ArtCenter for Teachers—are changing their names. This summer, they all become ArtCenter Extension (ACX).

Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One-Discovering the Dream-

Is your work getting in the way of your creativity? Do you feel you have more to offer but there are too many obstacles in your way to allow you have a purposeful career? Are you ready for one of the most important changes in your working life and need a nudge to get started? Then you are ready to take a unique class through ArtCenter Extension titled. “Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One-Discovering the Dream.”

This course is more than a class where the participants do the course work and, after a few tests, move on never to be heard from again. The course materials help the participants honestly look at what they like and don’t like about their current job, examine their entire lifetime of work versus personal accomplishments (successes and setbacks), compare creative strengths and weaknesses, complete an exercise on matching their creative assets to look for new job opportunities, and help their fellow classmates discover potential meaningful opportunities.

- Garrison Pena, Environmental Photographer- “Hi Tony, …I had the opportunity to travel up to Alaska for 2 weeks and it was the trip of a lifetime. I would call it a “spiritual awakening” and without overexaggerating, an “artistic a-ha moment”, since I first got into photography. Alaska is the most beautiful place I have seen thus far in my lifetime, and when I came back to LA, I knew that I had to go back because there is so much more that I want to explore and photograph beyond my previous itinerary.

This photograph is entitled: Mystère. It was taken in Cantwell, Alaska at late twilight. I’ve always had a fascination with how fog, mist, and atmosphere affect light and how it impacts scenery, but being an LA-boy born and raised, our fog isn’t per se entirely artistic or pretty in a sense. So, I didn’t have the highest expectations in capturing fog when I went. Now upon reflection, that notion was ultimately put to shame when I saw how ethereal and ominous Alaska fog looked. Emotionally, I was so engulfed and overwhelmed wondering, is this really real? Am I seeing this fog or am I dreaming? It is one of the greatest feelings ever. As an artist, that’s when I can say, this is why I do what I do!!! And to quote you Tony, I LOVE TO DO WHAT I DO!!!

I love the outdoors and want to travel to see different places in the future. I aim to pursue my passion in landscape photography especially with aerial imagery and working with drones. But in all honesty, I am open to anything at this point and welcome all possibilities. I am excited to see where life takes me and of course, I will stay in touch and share with you everything that’s happening in my life.

- Kjell Van Sice, Photographer & Designer- “Dear Tony, I hope you're doing well! I've been meaning to write you for a moment…

I'm so excited to share this with you--among other things, I started working as an ambassador and team rider for two new companies, one of which is Starboard, one of the most influential waters ports companies in the industry! I'm giving them feedback on some specific types of equipment and helping push the lineup into the future with design concepts. This morning I got a request from Svein, the head of Starboard, asking me if I wanted to fly to Vancouver next week to represent the company at their North American distributer's meeting and present the 2020 lineup to the North American retailers--all 450 of them! It's at an international outdoor retailer show...and of course I said yes!

I can't say enough how much I use the skills we worked on in your classes on a daily basis. My work today is less about shooting and more about presenting, pitching, educating...the other company for which I am now an ambassador, the Avasol Foundation (part of Avasol sunscreen), is putting together a lecture and hands-on education program for kids that is a cooperative effort with Patagonia and Parley (a sustainability design firm from NYC). Next year I'll be traveling to Hawaii, Fiji, Puerto Rico and beyond in events to educate kids about plastic pollution and the role of design in it...

So excited to share with you all that is happening. Again, I just want to emphasize how useful everything that we have discussed in classes has been since I left school. I pitch myself on a truly daily basis to a wide variety of professionals...it's been making the difference for me in job interviews...and of course pitching big ideas to brands and influencers!

And I'm so lucky to have Steve Sjuggerud still very much in my life as well. The gentleman with whom I did the surf book--he flew to Thailand with me recently to help pitch me to Starboard. He's prepping me this week for Wednesday. We're prepping to knock it out of the park!

Thank you for your email. The talk went well, and the time slot I was initially told I’d have was about 15-20 minutes—I ended up being asked to speak for 2 hours (hah)! At least a plus there was that I could answer questions (there were many) and present everything in great detail. It was a bit of a rough crowd to win over, few people wanted to be there I’m afraid—dealer conferences! I ended up taking nearly everyone out on the demo afternoon where we put people on foils, many for the first time. That got everyone hyped! I received complementary reviews from the higher ups at Starboard and was asked to speak at a larger conference in September, so that’s nice.

- Jeanette Paredes, “Good Morning Tony: I am writing to see if I can be a part of the SchmoozeFest in September? I have lots of work that I have been preparing for a proposed art show. I am searching for spots to have a ‘pop-up gallery.’ After I graduated from Art Center I did a series of Art Shows all over California, L. A. was my last stop. Out of money and time I put (the idea) on the back burner. Now I want to fire it back up as well as rebuilding a new out look on how to promote myself and my art.

Some of the sailing images from Mexico (3 trips in total so far) have been waiting for me to get out there and promote. I was successful in getting Trader Joe’s to by four images…in their Marina Del Rey store. This has lit a fire to open my business up to hotels and gym, etc…

Also in a slightly heavier note, I am in a rare position in life floating around Los Angeles while camping at the beach out of my car… Though this circumstance has brought me great satisfaction of living light, I am in great need of a creative space. I want to print B&W, digital, paint, dye, stencil and plaster. (Do you know of) any former alums or artists that have space to share or someone looking to rent for temporary status?

Maybe this could be a topic for the class or perhaps you have some ideas that I can start researching.

I am also looking into artist residencies and some more sailing excursion, though I thought hey put (it) out there, something might come back…

“Departing for Puerto Vallarta from LAX the words, please no more of the same rang through my head. It was an opportunity to re-think, and re-discover my curiosity, and point of view. I craved for an adventure, an uncomfortable, unknown, sailing adventure.

The reoccurring sway of the sea and the droll drums that lay between the Baja and Mainland Mexico gave me a brilliant display of Mother Nature. I was forced to stay in place and create in new way using the same tool. Allowing myself to create without judgment.

A visual poem of my time in the Sea of Cortez is a playful use of movement, depth and mood. They are images that relate feelings and emotions when struck with the enormousness of the sea.

The work is to be viewed as large format prints. One image the size of a billboard condensed inside a space, pushing the viewer closer. Attempting to re-create the vastness of the sea vs human. Another image will be placed inside a space using height and heat built to arouse our sense’s creating a moment of photo escapism. Currently I am looking for a space that can handle a show with multiple large format prints as well as interactive photo experiences.

Goal date December 12, 2019 at 7pm.

“About seven years ago, several personal tragedies left me unable to write. I had a side-hustle as an author of Young Adult and Middle-Grade fiction novels but lost my heart for intergalactic tales of beauty and the geek; enchanted road trips about awakening to intuition for the first time; and saving the world from a ‘shadow’ apocalypse (oddly autobiographical, who knew). Instead, I spent most days dealing with a world of real-life heartache and problem-solving which found me (among other things) paying rent with my jewelry and sobbing in the sand at my favorite beach asking God to, just, you know … take me away, please. After losing my home and then my health, I made one decision that would change my life forever.

I’d go back to the beginning. For me, this meant signing up for a night class my alma mater, The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, called ‘Finding A Meaningful Career,’ part of a 3-class series intended for art professionals who find themselves at a crossroads mid-career. In the aftermath of having to walk away from a hospitality project management construction corporation I helped to build, my livelihood had also been taken away. I needed to rebuild. I could go back to my multimedia design career, but I had new dreams I needed to find. Ones that would take my writing out of the shadows and place it center stage as my career. But I’ll be honest with you, living by my pen seemed a pipe dream at the time…

…Among the many exercises we did in class, one of the most important found me rolling out a huge sheet of butcher paper and drawing my business timeline over my personal timeline to try to identify patterns in my life. The black-and-white scribbles on that paper showed two powerful patterns -- resilience and creativity. I’d gotten through tragedy before -- including breaking my neck in a car accident. I could get through my current struggles. I had this.…

For the final assignment, I created a Venn diagram to discover my professional and personal sweet spot, where my talents overlapped my passions. Mine revealed -- writing, traveling, spirituality, and helping people.”

- Percy Carino, Graphic Artist- “I designed the label and also made the liquor. It is a Hawaiian Inspired Pineapple Limoncello. The proverb is Me Ke Aloha Nui which means, with much love. I took the first letters of each word and designed the logo so it still sounds Hawaiian- MKAN. The whole purpose of this was to create a means to exemplify what the Aloha means. Our previous SchmoozeFest was held at the Art Center at Night/Public Programs building, 950 South Raymond Ave., Pasadena, California. As always it was turned out to be another inspiring and entertaining event as attendees had a chance to show their work and exchange ideas. In case you missed it our next SchmoozeFest is scheduled for Thursday, September 12 in the same building and we hope you will attend. Remember to bring examples of your favorite projects, and share the evening with other enthusiastic creative individuals. I’m not sure how many years it has been since we wrote or talked. I’m sorry about that. I guess I let myself drown in the challenges here. I think ‘better late than never’

How are you guys doing?… I still get the emails from your class and I think they’re wonderful. I wish I could join in.

If I wanted to fill you in on the past seven years, it would fill volumes... I’ll just say it has been very tough and challenging and I’m not sure how or when it will end. In the meantime, I’m looking to help myself by possibly doing something creative again!! More like art therapy on my own. I think I’m suffering from complex PTSD!! Feel kind of stuck!

I’d like to hear about what’s going on with you guys…

I also wonder if you know anyone who can be my long distance art therapy buddy or coach!? Anywhere in the world will do and if necessary I think doing a project about the ongoing traumas might help me heal and let them go!? I can’t really talk about it in detail though....!

After all the hard work and the expense of my Art Center degree and brief design and teaching career, I have become a warrior, fighting for our patrimony in Iran!! It seems I have nothing to go back to even if I could quit! :( “

Legends of the past re-emerge to define the lasting power that is contained within their feminine beauty.

AC Gallery presents Egyptian Deities & Pop Culture Icons, a solo exhibition by artist Rachel Ganz and fundraising event benefiting City of Hope, a premier cancer research foundation.

Rachel Ganz has been painting, drawing, and creative artwork since the age of four. Ganz was inspired by her love of Pop Culture and Ancient Egypt including her most recent exposure to the magnificent King Tut exhibit at the California Science Center this past year. Expressionistic paintings characteristic of Rachel Ganz’s oeuvre, including the artist’s bold use of bright colors, striking design, thick paint, and high glosses bring the characters to life with their soulful eyes and charming faces will illuminate the White Cube exhibition space inside AC Gallery. Ganz will debut her latest paintings including ‘Betty Boop’ - a starlet of Pop Culture and more than 1930s Jazz Age flapper with her big-lashed flirty eyes and petite body responsible for showcasing a very savvy, sophisticated, and confident woman in animated form as well as the monumental 60 x 30 inch mixed media Nefertiti Holding Hand of Goddess Isis - a painting that glorifies the Ancient Egyptian deities Queen Nefertiti and goddess Isis, recognizing the religious revolution they helped construct in Ancient Egypt.

Global icons that have characterized feminine beauty and power - Nefertiti, Betty Boop, and others - will come together and draw the viewer’s gaze into their eyes, allowing the feel, magic, and mystery of the past Ancient Egyptian to more current Pop Culture eras to emerge.

Holy Cow! How time flies! The next SchmoozeFest is fast approaching on Thursday, May 9. This exciting event will be from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Art Center College of Design/ South Campus 950 South Raymond Avenue, Pasadena.

Unlike past SchmoozeFests this one will be held in Room #M-1 (the Mezzanine level) and can be reached by pressing “M” on the elevator. As usual we will start out with an announcement of new class offerings at Art Center at Night, updates on news from Crafting a Meaningful Career (CMC) alums, presentations by attendees, and a networking session to encourage creative cooperation. I wanted to quickly reach out and see if you would spread the word about mine and Holly’s new endeavor as I think it could be of real benefit to folks. Especially, once they’ve taken your courses, they need to keep skills sharp! Here’s a little info from an email I sent out earlier today”:

Hi All! My producing partner, Holly Payberg and I have been thinking about the art of pitching. What a bane of existence it is for so many and how it’s often such a stumbling block for our fellow creatives. We know from our own experience how much our confidence level and careers changed once we finally stopped avoiding it and focused on mastering it, so we came up with the idea to help others do the same by creating “The Pitch Gym” and wanted to share with you.

The Pitch Gym is a safe, but intentional, monthly workout space where people can come to finally master those essential two minute and 30 second pitches. In true gym fashion, it’s a place where you can come back as often as you like to get in shape for any new projects you have, or simply pop in to practice and get your confidence up before a big meeting.

As coaches, Holly and I deliver a one/two punch, focusing on the content of the pitch as well as the delivery. In addition to being writer/producers ourselves, Holly comes from a background in development (Dir. of Development for Signature Pictures) and I have extensive experience in live performance as the unprecedented female lead for two of Eric Idle’s stage tours. Basically, we’ve learned how to craft a killer pitch and shine in delivering it (as evidenced by our latest claim to fame as two-time Pitch Conference champs at the American Film Market.)

In April, we will be doing a two part series for women in film on pitching (themselves first then project pitches), as well as leading a pitch workshop (also for women in film) for their finance intensive program to help people pitch their projects specifically to investors for financing.

About the Corcoran (reprinted from the Corcoran Gallery of Art web site): The Corcoran Gallery of art was one of the first private museums in the United States established in 1869 by Willian Wilson Corcoran and expanded in 1880 to include the Corcoran College of Art and Design with the mission “dedicated to art and used solely for the purpose of encouraging the American genius.” For the next 145 years, the Corcoran played an instrumental role among American museums and art schools. The museum presented, interpreted and preserved the art of current and past times; its college of art nurtured and helped shape new generations of artists and designers. Education was a central focus, not just in the Corcoran’s classrooms but in its galleries and throughout the greater Washington region. Though American art was the collection’s emphasis, the art of other nations and cultures is, when appropriate, was acquired and exhibited.

“Beginning 14 February, Hauser & Wirth presents ‘Annie Leibovitz. The Early Years, 1970 – 1983: Archive Project No. 1,’ a new installation of the 2017 exhibition of the same title presented by the LUMA Foundation’s Parc des Ateliers in Arles, France. As the first comprehensive exhibition in Los Angeles devoted to the earliest work of this renowned American artist, ‘The Early Years’ features more than 4,000 photographs taken between 1970 and 1983.

Works on view trace Leibovitz’s development as a young talent, capturing the dramatic cultural and political shifts of the Seventies. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the exhibition begins with her work for Rolling Stone magazine and visually chronicles the defining moments and key protagonists of the decade. Over the course of her career, Leibovitz became an avatar of the changing cultural role of photography as an artistic medium. Pinned to walls gridded with string, the images on view reveal her singular ability to merge the tactics of portraiture and photojournalism with profound humanism and sly wit. December 11, 2018 – April 7, 2019

The exhibition highlights the influential work of 11 award-winning female photojournalists from National Geographic. Women of Vision is a tribute to the spirit and ambition of these forward-thinking and distinguished female photographers and underscores the momentous work they have done to bring narratives from all over the world to the pages of National Geographic and into the homes of millions of people.

Featuring nearly 100 photographs, Women of Vision includes moving depictions of far-flung cultures; compelling illustrations of conceptual topics, such as memory and teenage brain chemistry; and arresting images of social issues, such as child marriage and twenty-first-century slavery. In addition, the exhibition demonstrates how National Geographic magazine picture editors work closely with the photographers to select images and tell stories. Video vignettes present first-person accounts that reveal the photographers’ individual styles, passions, and approaches to their craft.

Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment will be open to the public from December 11, 2018 through April 7, 2019 at the Forest Lawn Museum, Forest Lawn-Glendale, 1712 S. Glendale Avenue, Glendale, California.

- Marcy Craig- Wardrobe Stylist, Textile Aficionado - “…I’m working on the second season of Strange Angel, the fascinating story of Jack Parsons, the visionary man who made a pact with the devil and invented rocket science and the Jet Propulsion Lab, in Pasadena, CA. We’re shooting on the Paramount lot this season, and the show is depicted during in the wars years, 1942-1945. I am currently supervising the start of the prep, until the regular supervisor finishes her current project and takes over from me. I then will be in charge of the workroom, where we be making all of the original costumes for the cast. Our workroom is in the Edith Head building, which is where Edith worked for so many decades, before she too, was fired and let go. The win at this point in my career is I am doing the same job Edith did, in the same building. How great is that? I get to “work” in her shade!!!

(Editor’s note: Below is from the announcement of the event.)

An inspirational look behind the making of a video series.

Do you have an idea? Perhaps you want to publish your book, or have a photography exhibit, or even make a film?

Gail Mooney has done all three, and her presentation may help you turn your idea into a reality! She will take you behind the scenes of her current personal project, entitled Like A Woman. It’s a video series about women who are working in traditionally male-dominated professions. It’s a subject she is familiar with, after spending a lifetime as a female photographer and later filmmaker in a predominately male environment.

To date, she has created ten videos for this series, which include subjects such as a female race car driver, an industrial/firefighting helicopter pilot, an auto mechanic and a blimp pilot for Goodyear to name a few.

Gail’s Goal: Create videos that shine a light on the accomplishments of these women in addition to the challenges they faced as they bucked the odds and followed their passions. Her intent is to change the consciousness of our culture and to inspire, empower and motivate other women to pursue their dreams.

- Michael Stern, Photographer, Filmmaker- ““I was hired to document the process of rebuilding one of a 100 Faux Bois trees at the Huntington Library. It was supposed to be a scholarly reference document only. Very dry. Somehow we agreed on a 3 minute time-lapse of the process. (my usual schtick). Second day of filming the director came out to give us a best wishes and to make sure I was going to do video of the actual sculpting process so people could see how painstaking the process is. So much for the 3 minute time-lapse! The whole project got turned on its’ head at that moment.

Long story short, we ended up doing a short, arty documentary with sound, time-lapse and live action video. The 6 week shoot extended to 7 months and a 4 week edit went to 11 months. (off and on of course) I’m thankful the budget grew accordingly.

- Stephanie Zhong, Founder + Creative Director, Dear Anne Media- “It’s been a week since the 20th anniversary celebration of the paper clips project in Tennessee, and I’m still hunting for the words to express the overflow of love and hope I felt there. The Whitwell community was so welcoming. Everyone was trusting enough to get vulnerable, emotional, open in a short time. Or maybe they were beyond excited to talk about the ripple effects and miracles that came from learning about and meeting people seemingly different from them. I was blown away by the opportunities and relationships that came from this one project. My heart grew three sizes – so moved by everyone I met. Their stories were more remarkable than I imagined.

Meanwhile, fires started blazing back home. On the return flight home, I didn’t know if the Woolsey fire would reach my house. Jim had texted me the night before asking what I wanted him to pack in the ‘just in case’ evacuation bag (besides my wedding dress and Dodgerina, our turtle). I pictured our house (which is finally getting remodeled) burnt to the ground. For an instant, I felt a twinge of fear and devastation. But after standing inside a rail car that went from a symbol of death and hate into a permanent place of love, I felt a greater sense of peace knowing whatever were to happen, everything will be okay.”

It was my largest dream to execute, a decision I made in the summer of 1993, freshly out of high school when my brother and I went on a 41 day road trip to see 14 states. I bought an 80 acre ranch, with a 2,500 sf house built in 2011. I own some sheep and goats, chickens, and I built a 2,700sf barn for breeding falcons.

I was pleased to win the silver medal for over 70 age group, and 4th for the 15 in the 60 and older. Would have won another medal for oldest entrant were it not for my friend John Bertrand in the 1 mile walk. (John's 93). Feeling great except for a few aches and pains. No marathons scheduled for the near future.

The sponsor was Presbyterian Hospital of Socorro, New Mexico. Event was a 5 k run, 1 mile walk. About 70 entries. Most around the campus of New Mexico tech.”

- Leslie Kim, Graphic Artist, Fine Artist- “…I’ve been working pretty solidly as a freelance food package designer for Jo's Candies. They also have a lot of private label customers that need package design, so that means many new packages every year.

I've also been working on improving my rock climbing t-shirt business Dynamite Starfish http://www.godynamitestarfish.com. This year was a big one for exposure. A group called Brown Girls Climb (advocates of diversity in the outdoor industry) used my products in a photoshoot for Elevation Outdoors magazine, so my shirts were displayed on the cover and in a pretty hefty inside spread too. I was a vendor a women's climbing festival in Los Angeles and met some great ladies there. A few more vendor events at gyms coming up too.

On the art side of things, I'll be having some art up for the month of February at Art Share LA's Perimeter Gallery. Mostly paintings, some prints, and a hanging sculpture.. basically I get 6' space to hang up whatever I want. I got rejected from a show in the main gallery, but this opportunity presented itself out of that submission, so I'm really excited about it! I'll also be vending at the DTLA Maker Faire on 12/1/18.

Things are great. It's a lot of hard work and ‘hustling’ for lack of a better word, but it's kind of the only way I can operate. I think of your class often and recommend it to so many friends who are looking to find more fulfilling career paths.”

- Jessica Truelyt, Artist, Ceramicist- ‘Hello ladies and Tony, It is hard to believe that it has been a year since we gathered weekly to explore what brings meaning and fulfillment to our creative lives. I think back to our class often with deep gratitude for the variety of perspectives and the vulnerability shared.

I wanted to let you all know that, with the encouragement and clarity gained from class, I’ve been pursuing my ceramic work more and displayed my work as part of the Hwy 62 Art Tours in Joshua Tree this month. There have been a few professional opportunities that I’ve considered and ultimately declined because I knew it would take me away from my creative production time. It’s a scary thing to say no to more money to pursue a passion, but I’m peaceful in the journey and excited to see where the path leads.

You each were inspiring to me in your own ways. I hope you each are well and finding creative fulfillment in whatever way is possible for you this season wherever you are in the world.

At this latest SchmoozeFest photographer Dennis Hill showed photos for his recent project photographing unique architectural structures for archival art purposes; Visual Hunter Bill Wishner shared stories of traveling the world seeking out ephemeral street art and how he captures these images adhering to strict aesthetic criteria, along with a poetic story of “The One That Got Away” about a breathtaking image of the lunar eclipse while attending an opera in Verona, Italy ; and Cristina Benedetti who showed amazing images of her performances including her involvement with the innovative dance group, Illuminate, “…a company based on the fusion of technology and dance.”

- On Saturday, August 25, Jennifer Julian proudly announced the official Launch Party for her new movie production company, June Bug Pictures! We are exceedingly proud of her accomplishments and she has allowed us to share photos of the event featuring shots of she and her business partner, Holly Payberg along with supporters, and mock-up movie posters for her two main projects featuring historical female heroes. Dear friends it’s SchmoozeFest time again and this time the date is Thursday, September 6, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 at the Art Center at Night/Public Programs building at 950 South Raymond Ave., Pasadena, CA. As is the usual agenda our SchmoozeFest starts off with an announcement of events originated by people who have attended our classes, workshops, or lectures. - Carmel O’Mara-Horwitz informs us that on September 1, a show she has been working on for the past two years of the work by Faiya Fredman, will be opening at the Oceanside Museum of Art. In addition to learning a great deal through this opportunity she has also had the opportunity to create products that will be on sale at the gift store such as a coloring book, scarves (pictured herein), handbags, tote bags, and jewelry, as well as greeting cards and postcards. “This brings all my past work to the job. It is nice to help others make a product for the first time.” Not only that but she has “…been making lesson plans for the museum to offer school classes that visit in the fall. “Hi Tony. So I am happy to share with you the project I have been working on there last two years. I have been helping Faiya Fredman put together her show at the Oceanside Museum of Art. The show will be opening on September 1st.!

This has been a great opportunity and I have been learning a lot! There are a few of us working as a team. We have worked with shipyards to get sculptures made… Finding printers and framers has been a good education. Faiya wanted to make some of her work into lenticulars and so I have been paid to learn how to make them with her. It is not my art but that has helped me see what it takes to get work ready for a show. For example, letting the curators pick the images without interference… since they see what you don’t.

With the team, I have also been creating products to sell in the gift store. We now have a coloring book. I translated her artwork into line art for people to color. Scarves, handbags, tote, bags, and jewelry, as well as greeting cards and postcards. This brings all my past work to the job. It is nice to help others make a product for the first time.

Last I have been making lesson plans for the museum to offer school classes that visit in the fall. We also plan some activities for anyone who visits the museum meaning adults and families.

Anyway, I am grateful for your class; it helped me look out of the box and recognize work.

I’ve moved out to Joshua Tree where I bought a house (1961 homestead) up by the boulders where all the lots are 5 acres. I’ve really been enjoying the process and have met a great number of like minded fellow artists and creative types out there, many of whom are from New York, LA, or the Bay Area.
